There are stories about basketball events and records that were years in the making. What the Zachary girls basketball team did Friday night puts a new spin on things.

The Broncos honored coach Tami McClure for her 500th career win that happened during the pandemic year.

Assistant coach Nekia Jones asked McClure about her record a few months ago. Jones, who played at both Texas and UL, took it from there and did the research, which led to Broncos honoring McClure with a commemorative basketball before a 62-56 win over Woodlawn. McClure now has 544 wins.

“The wins are not special for me. It’s for the players I have coached and what they accomplished, not what I have accomplished,” McClure said.

The teams also had a special guest in attendance Friday. LSU guard Flau’Jae Johnson was among the players who met the Zachary team after Monday’s LSU win over Tennessee. Johnson told the Broncos she would come to one of their games, and she followed through four days later.

Griffins net football honor

Dutchtown was among six Louisiana schools honored by the National Football Foundation for academic excellence in 2022-23.

Benton, Brother Martin and Dutchtown were the Class 5A schools honored. Others honored were St. Thomas More in 4A, Iowa in 3A and Ouachita Christian in 1A.

Brusly coach resigns

Brusly girls basketball coach Shawn Bradford has resigned for personal reasons, Brusly principal Walt Lemoine said.

The Panthers were ranked fourth in the LHSAA's most recent Division II nonselect power ratings and previously made back-to-back LHSAA tourney appearances in Class 3A. Lemoine said assistant coach Trent Ellis will take over head coach for the remainder of the season.

Prep notable

Scotlandville junior guard Kameira McDonald was honored for scoring her 1,000th career point before last week’s nondistrict game with Southern Lab.

McDonald is averaging more than 16 points per game for the Hornets.
