CROOKSTON GIRLS BASKETBALL COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN LOSS TO HAWLEY

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team’s comeback in the final minute with three three-pointers came up short and the Hawley Nuggets held on to win 63-58 in a game played at the Crookston High School Gymnasium.  

FIRST HALF –
Hawley came out strong and played solid defense early in the game and built a 9-4 lead behind seven points from 5’10 sophomore Isabel Steer.  Crookston stopped the run with a Chloe Boll three-pointer and battled back to tie the game at 10-10 after a Halle Winjum three-point play with 10 minutes left in the half.
The teams were tied at 13 and 15 before Crookston took a 17-15 lead after a Libby Salentine basket.  The lead changed hands on the next five possessions, and Hawley led 22-21 with three minutes left in the half.
Hawley finished the half strong as they went on an 11-2 run behind six points from Isabel Steer to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. 

SECOND HALF –
Crookston started the second half with a Winjum three-pointer and an Isabel Smith basket to get within a 31-28 deficit. in the first 90 seconds of the half.  The Nuggets answered with an 8-0 run with back-to-back threes from Isabel Steer after a basket from Anna Steer for a 39-28 lead.  Crookston wasn’t able to recover after Hawley took a double-digit lead as every time the Pirates would score, Hawley had an answer.
Crookston tried to mount a late comeback and got within seven points (59-52) after a Winjum three-pointer.  Hawley made two free throws before Winjum buried back-to-back three-pointers 11 seconds apart to bring the Pirates within a 61-58 deficit with 22 seconds to go in the game.
Crookston fouled the Nuggets’ Katarina Vetter and she made both free throws with 20 seconds left for a 63-58 lead.  Crookston attempted another three-pointer and missed a three-point attempt and Hawley held on for a 63-58 victory.

Crookston drops to 12-7 on the year and will travel to Glyndon on Tuesday to take on the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels.  A game that can be heard on KROX Radio. 
Hawley improves to 12-7 on the year.
