Avatar producer Jon Landau has teased the plot of the fifth instalment of the record breaking franchise.

With Avatar: The Way of Water poised to shatter all records set by its predecessor, director James Cameron is definitely going ahead with the third and fourth films in the franchise. And by the looks of it, the fifth film won’t be too far away either.

In an interview with Empire, Landau teased what the plot of the film will be.

According to the producer, there will be "a big time jump" for Avatar 4, which will then lead into Avatar 5, which is partially set on Earth.

"There’s over-population and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder [in Avatar’s version of Earth]," he said.

"But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going," he added. "The films are also about the idea that we can change course."

Cameron had previously teased that the third film would see the introduction of a new, antagonistic race of the Na’Vi. And now Landau has opened up more on these "Ash People", who, according to Empire, are an "aggressive, volcanic race" of the Na’Vi.

Their leader is Varang, who will be played by Game of Thrones star Oona Chaplin.

"There are good humans and there are bad humans," Landau said. "It’s the same thing on the Na’vi side. Oftentimes, people don’t see themselves as bad. What is the root cause of how they evolve into what we perceive as bad? Maybe there are other factors there that we aren’t aware of."

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in cinemas worldwide. The first film is streaming on Disney+.
