In an offseason where Purdue sought a major player to take over the point guard position and notably missed on Nijel Pack (Miami) and Tyrese Hunter (Texas), Purdue continued the search and finally settled on David Jenkins, Jr. The well traveled guard had started his career with South Dakota State but transferred out after two seasons to UNLV, where after sitting out one season and playing another, followed a coach to Utah. Inevitably, Jenkins found his way to Purdue as a graduate transfer with the hopes of starting for a Purdue team that seemed to have a desperate need at the point guard position.

Purdue Basketball: Matt Frost Senior Send Off

The Purdue faithful’s postmortem following arguably the biggest upset in college basketball history will continue for some time, generate a lot of opinions and suggestions. The following several posts will add to that chorus. That said, it seems most of the cacophony surrounds finding that one or two thing(s) the program needs to do differently to avoid being Turdue in March when there are several – at least potential – changes called for. Therefore, this will arrive as several posts to adequately cover the as-seen issues.

As promised, here's the first deep-dive into the rough-and-tumble that is off-court Purdue men's basketball. This program – not just this team, but this program – has an ingrained mental issue, and progress will be stunted until this is solved. Purdue churning out Big Ten conference contenders (and occasionally winners) which ignominiously fail come March has become so commonplace it is now a state of mind, and it goes back further than the past three years’ upset losses to progressively larger double-digit seeds. I saw it the last several minutes in the game when multiple shooters passed up wide-open outside shots. I see it as part of a perpetually nervous fan base that has learned to not trust lofty regular season resumes. Most painfully, I see (and hear) it from opponents’ supporters who bust my chops regularly, both before and after each successive letdown.

First thing, as you would expect, is first, I’m not going to advocate for the firing of head coach Matt Painter. I understand that there’s a certain subset of the Purdue fandom that wants him gone, and I certainly understand their anger and frustration, but I’m not there yet. I actually have seen some people say they’ve advocated for him to be fired since 2008 and my mind just about exploded. I acknowledge that March has been Painter’s undoing. I also acknowledge that this loss to Fairleigh Dickinson is completely unacceptable. There’s no world in which it’s okay for a 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed. Especially to a 16 seed that shouldn’t even have been in the tournament. I mean, this team only got in because their conference tournament champion wasn’t eligible for March Madness. What a wild confluence of events that led Purdue to lose to Fairleigh Dickinson. So, I’m not here to say Matt Painter is an infallible coaching genius. He’s made mistakes, a number of them, but my hope, and I hope yours as well, is that Painter will learn from this and improve for next year.
