Late rally lifts Bears past Yantis on road

YANTIS — The Sulphur Bluff Bears won their second straight game Friday, Jan. 27 by taking down the Yantis Owls 54-45 on the road. This win allowed the Bears to even the season series with the Owls, as the Owls won the first matchup 70-64 earlier this season.

The first quarter would see both teams battle hard, as they fought for the early control. The Owls would hold a 19-12 lead as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter would see the Bears step up their game, as they fought to stay in the game. The Bears would outscore the Owls 13-8 in the second quarter, trimming the deficit to 27-25 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, both teams continued their stellar play in the third quarter, with both teams playing hard and tough. A 9-9 tie would be the result, as the Owls held onto a 36-34 lead.

Knowing they needed to step up their game if they wanted to win, the Bears did exactly that. The Bears would out outscore the Owls 20-9 in the fourth quarter, pulling off a 54-45 comeback win.

Ayden Johnson led the charge with a 21-point, 20-rebound double-double, also adding one steal. Landin Dugnolle also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, also adding two assists and two steals.

Dakota Klempter came up with nine points, four rebounds, four steals, and four assists. Shane Stanley finished with eight points, 19 rebounds, two steals, and one assist.

Matthew Overly rounded out the scoring with six points, also adding seven assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Brody Gunn was another key contributor with seven rebounds and two steals.

With the win, the Bears are up to 6-2 in district play and 15-15 overall. They resumed action Thursday, taking on the Avery Bulldogs.
