Greenwood boys’ basketball dominates, ranked No. 2

The Greenwood boys’ basketball team won two more games last week and bumped up to the No. 2 spot in the district power rankings, while Newport moved further away from a district birth.

Currently 16-1 overall, the Wildcats stand behind Linville Hill Christian who is 14-0 in the A rankings.

Greenwood added two more league wins to its record starting with Halifax.

Tyler Sherman once again led the team with 18 points followed by Gage Wirth and Braden Sarver who each recorded 14 while Ben Brinser had nine and Kyle Corkle and Sam Myers had seven each.

The Wildcats came out strong in the first quarter with 17 points when Sherman had two two-pointers, Wirth banked a three and Sarver made a free throw.

Sherman kept it up in the second quarter with a three-pointer and two more two-point field goals.

Greenwood had a steady lead going into halftime up 33-20.

In the third quarter, Sarver came out hot banking two three-pointers and two two-point shots. Wirth had two three-pointers and a free throw as well.

Sherman finished the game with two more two-pointers and a free throw, and Wirth banked a three and a free throw.

Greenwood scored 11 three-point shots in total and held Halifax to 22 points in the second half. Sherman had six offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds and helped out the defense with seven steals.

This led to the Wildcats’ first win of the week, defeating Halifax 69-42.

Greenwood finished its week with a game against Juniata.

Sherman took control of the offense with 26 points against the Indians. Wirth tallied nine, Brinser had six and Sarver had five.

Going seven-for-seven on free throws for the night, Sherman had four in the first quarter, two in the second and one in the last.

Greenwood had 17 points in the first quarter while holding Juniata to just two. Sherman had 13 of those points.

The Wildcats put up 13 more points before the half and ended up winning 55-31. Myers tallied eight assists for the game.

Newport didn’t have the same success story.

The Buffaloes are currently sixth in the AA rankings where the top four qualify for districts.

With three games, Newport had a loss against East Juniata and wins over Juniata Christian and Line Mountain.

The Tigers defeated the Buffaloes 44-28 after Newport struggled to get more than ten points in a quarter.

Shane Lamprey led the Buffaloes with ten points from five two-pointers, Ruben Moreno had six points and Two Garcia recorded five.

East Juniata’s Jake Brackbill scored 15 points for the evening.

The rest of the week went well for the Buffaloes starting with a game against Line Mountain.

Moreno led the way with 17 points while Lamprey had 12 and Ryder Wands tallied nine.

The team went 12-15 on free throws and held Line Mountain scoreless in the final quarter. Newport secured its win in the final quarter and scored 24 points.

The Buffaloes created a two-game win streak by defeating Juniata Christian 45-18.

Josh Bellis was the top scorer this game with 18 points from nine two-pointers and Wands had seven points.

The Newport defense held Juniata Christian to two points in the first quarter, three in the second, then allowed nine in the third and four in the fourth, never letting it get past 10 points in a quarter.

With four games left, one of those games against Greenwood, Newport has two more weeks to climb the rankings and earn a spot on the district bracket.
