Iowa State Wrestling holds off West Virginia, earns 17th-straight Big 12 win

The following is a press release from Iowa State Athletics Communications:

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – No. 3 Iowa State (13-2, 6-0 Big 12) survived a scare at West Virginia (7-4, 1-4 Big 12) Friday night, 20-13. The Cyclones dug out of a 10-0 hole after dropping the first three matches of the dual and picked up bonus-point victories from Paniro Johnson and Yonger Bastida in the process.

ISU has now won 26 of its last 28 duals overall and 17 consecutive Big 12 matchups.

After the slow start, Paniro Johnson stopped the bleeding with a convincing 14-4 major decision over Sam Hillegas. Johnson, an Erie, Pennsylvania native, got to his offense often in front of a large contingent of family and friends in attendance, racking up six takedowns in the win.ADVERTISING

Jason Kraisser picked up a key victory at 157 pounds with a 5-3 decision over a lanky Alex Hornfeck. Eleven of Kraisser’s 21 matches this season have been decided by a takedown or less.

In the marquee matchup of the dual, No. 2 David Carr took out No. 10 Peyton Hall, 8-2. Carr was aggressive early with a pair of first-period takedowns and added a third in the final period to lock up the win.

The Cyclones closed the dual with three-straight wins by Marcus Coleman (184), Bastida (197) and Sam Schuyler (285).

Coleman was eying bonus points against Anthony Carman after he locked up a cradle for four near fall points in the second period. A late takedown and ride out by Carman in the third period prevented bonus points, but Coleman picked up a 9-5 decision.

Bastida registered seven takedowns in a 17-8 major decision against Austin Cooley, including six in the last two periods.

At 285 pounds, Schuyler put the dual away with a 4-2 decision over Michael Wolfgram. Schuyler secured a first-period takedown and put on a couple of tough rides against the Mountaineer to earn the win.
