A group of friends with backpacks and skateboards are doing good in their community.
Tim Byrne is as pro skateboarder turned missionary. He leads a team that meets weekly at All City Church in Southeast Portland.
For the past three years, Tim and his buddies have been hitting the pavement on their skateboards and handing out food, water and other necessities to those living in tents along the path next to Interstate 205.
“The goal is to engage, listen and just if people need prayer,” he says. “A lot of these guys, they have had that life. And they’ve been off the streets so they can connect in a whole other way.”
Tim and his group were brought together by their faith and their love of skating.
Martin Kephart used to be homeless. He struggled with meth addiction for years.
This is his way of giving back for all the blessings he has received.
"I was the person we are serving and loving out on Mall 205 and other areas. I was homeless, eating out of the trash, shooting junk during the day, stealing and making angry the taxpayers with homes and children," he says. "I know what it is like, and I know that sometimes it is not money that saves a person, it's the love and people did it for me, and I want to do it for them. [It’s love] that saves a person."
Tim and his crew have worked hard to build trust with the folks they meet on the trail. As a result, they get an unfiltered look at what those living in tents can face on a daily basis.
“You see a lot of addiction, mental illness trafficking, sex trafficking, and it’s heartbreaking,” Tim says. “Oh, it’s hard, and I have been threatened. We have been threatened.”
But that doesn’t deter this group. It’s the stories of hope that keep them coming back out here week after week, year after year.
“This guy was going to commit suicide unbeknownst to me,” Tim says. “We talked, engaged, prayed. A week later, he told one of my team, on of my friends, that was the case, and because we engaged and prayed, he said, I want you guys to know that you are doing something out her that means something.”
