Growing up in New York City, Reesa Kashuk used to take bagels for granted.
“It was just one of those things that you didn’t even think about because you’re just getting a bagel all the time,” she said. “It was just always there.”
Every Sunday morning, she and her mom had a tradition of meeting her radio DJ dad for a bagel breakfast after his late-night radio show. But when she moved to the Bay Area in 2014, she quickly discovered an oval-shaped hole in her heart.

She’d never baked before, but she was homesick enough to try. When a friend from New York visited her, they decided to attempt making their own bagels. That first batch didn’t turn out well, but the process sparked something in her.
Nine years later, Kashuk is opening her very own bagel shop in Oakland.
