Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has revealed that his character Sean Tully will fear for his life in next week's episodes.

The show will hint at a possible dark side to Sean's new partner Laurence Reeves, as questions are raised over the tragic death of his wife Lindsey.

In Monday's episode, a taxi driver called Mitch shares an alarming theory with Todd and Eileen Grimshaw.

Mitch reveals that he was having an affair with Laurence at the time that Lindsey died in a mountain accident. He has always suspected that Laurence pushed Lindsey from the top of the mountain.

Todd is quick to warn Sean that he might be in danger, but he becomes frustrated when Sean initially refuses to believe him.

Speaking about the storyline, Antony explained: "From a drama point of view, this is a classic 'boy who cried wolf' story – that Todd has said everything out loud about Laurence that he could possibly say, but there is always going to be that one time when something might be true.

"Of course, Todd being the way he is – regardless of whether things are true or not – it is always about 'what is the motive?' Todd seems to always have a motive for anything he does.

"Sean doesn't have a motive for anything. He messes up and can be deeply irritating at times but it is never through malice.

"So even when it seems to be coming from a good place, Sean can't help but feel Todd is just a bit of a nasty piece of work and he is doing it on purpose.

"Even when it comes from a protective place over Sean and it is something that Sean should be told about, it very quickly also turns into Todd being excited that he has this news to tell."

Once Sean has time to think about the severity of Todd's allegations, he starts to question whether Laurence could be capable of murder after all.

This comes to a head when Laurence books a romantic mini-break for him and Sean, promising that it'll involve mountains.

Antony continued: "When Sean is on his own, he starts to think about what Todd has said about how Laurence's wife has died. Sean has been so unlucky in love that he is used to that feeling and that default mode. It is really simple and quick for him to go that place again and think the worst of Laurence.

"As soon as Todd puts a flea in his ear, about what he knows about Laurence, Sean reacts badly and tells him he's a spiteful evil liar, but the moment he gets two minutes to himself he starts thinking: 'You know what? It is probably true'."

Asked whether Sean genuinely thinks Laurence could harm him, Antony replied: "Yes he does, and I can identify with that because a trait Sean and I share is being a catastrophiser, so that is very easy for me to play that with Sean.

"Sometimes in real life I start worrying about things that could happen, and people around me just look at me as if I am mad that my brain has gone to that place.

"If someone I know is having tests at hospital for something minor I will go to the worst case scenario in my brain. So I can totally understand why Sean is thinking the worst about this situation.

"It is a default mode of his that he just thinks: 'Well, that's it'. He thinks that it is always his destiny that it's always going to go wrong. He has low self esteem, he is all front. The funny man, the jokey side of him is always a cover."

Antony hinted that he'd like to see Sean and Laurence work out their issues, if he doesn't turn out to be a murderer.

Praising co-star Robert Shaw Cameron, who plays Laurence, he said: "I'm loving working with him. I read with a few people and actually they were all great and could have played the part, but Rob was the one that clicked and he is northern.

"He has a great sense of humour and we got on from the beginning in the read through. He is lovely to have around.

"I would love to explore the relationship and see Sean and Laurence living together, but who knows, Sean could self sabotage.

"Also, Sean has been at Eileen's for almost 20 years and the joy of that house is all the people who either live there, or who visit and pass through and there are some wonderful people there at the moment. It would be hard to leave that. I'd love to still be on the street as a neighbour but still always tipping up at Eileen's."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
