The Eugene school District 4J is holding a hiring fair for special education teachers on Saturday, February 4.
The District is looking to fill about ten positions, including school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, and nurses.
They are hoping to meet experienced teachers, recent graduates and interns.
If teachers do not have a special education license, the district is offering a new program called Grow your Own. Under this program, you can apply for the job even if you don't have the required license. The school will allow you to gain experience in the field and teach special education for one year.
"Let's expand what we will except for who can be a teacher, based on knowledge and skills and experience. Eventually, we're going to hold them to all of the same educational standards, but we might not have to wait til they get through, check every box before we let them get started," said Karen Apgar, student services administrator for 4J school district.
Special Education licenses require a masters degree, which can take 1-2 years in addition to student teaching experience. Many of these programs are offered at night and during weekends to accommodate working teachers.
If you're thinking of applying, you can pre-schedule an interview by heading to their website; search for 'Special Ed Job Fair'.
Walk-ins are also welcome.
The event will be held between 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. at the 4J Education Center
