Mars Area Primary Center shuts down after bed bug found on student

BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — As soon as a bed bug was found on a student at Mars Area Primary Center, no kids were allowed inside the building Friday.

The district closed the school after a bed bug was found on a student Thursday. Officials said that student was throughout the building during the school day.

A man with grandkids in the district said the situation is scary.

“They multiple quickly and they will spread really, really quickly,” said Jim Kelly.

The district notified parents yesterday afternoon that all kindergarten and first grade students had to do remote learning today.

“They just did virtual so nothing different than what it was during COVID,” said parent Craig Westrick.

Westrick has a daughter in first grade and explained why this can be concerning.

“I think since the kids are close together it could spread quickly I’m glad they took care of it,” he said.

The district said they are taking necessary steps and had exterminators treating and cleaning the entire school for bed bugs.

School leaders recommend parents who are concerned about bed bugs on clothing or in school bags should place those items in a sealed plastic bag to prevent the spread. Items should be washed and dried on high heat for at least 30 minutes right away to kill any bed bugs.

11 News reached out to district to find out if students will be allowed back to school on Monday. We’re waiting to hear back.
