The Gadsden Police Department said the man who intervened was Lieutenant Josh Russell.
The incident happened on Rainbow Drive and Hollywood Road shortly before 1:00 p.m. According to a bystander, the child was riding a small toy car where vehicles were traveling.
Lt. Russell was headed southbound on Rainbow Drive, when he noticed another vehicle had stopped due to the child.
The lieutenant got out of his car and removed the child from the roadway.
The police department said Lt. Russell said he was glad the Lord put him in right place, at the right time, and added that he was "just doing his job."
