ROCKLAND — Philip E. ‘Sonny’ Myers, Jr., 72, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side, Sunday, January 29, 2023, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Rockland, May 17, 1950, he was the son of Philip E., Sr. and Virginia Myers. Raised in Thomaston, he attended local schools, graduating from Georges Valley High School in 1968, and then, EMVTI, in Bangor in 1970, where he obtained a degree in Business. He excelled in sports, especially golf, and was proud to have been on the winning team for the ME State Technical College Championship.

Possessing a youthful business sense, Sonny owned a truck at 15 and his first home at 19. While in high school, he apprenticed with his mentor, Edward Gordon, at The Woodcraft Shop. Following school, he worked in the business office at Martin Marietta, during which time he met his wife, Raeberta Jordan. Together, they enjoyed wintering in Florida and summering on Pitcher Pond in Lincolnville.

Sonny loved his family; friends; dog, Fritz; and music. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, and shrimping when in Florida. He was a member of the Maine Senior Golf Association, a Master Mason of the Orient Lodge in Thomaston, and a member of “The One That Didn’t Get Away Club” (Brook Trout- 4 lbs, 9 oz). He lived life in the present and to the fullest.

After Sonny left Martin Marietta, he and his wife purchased The Woodcraft Shop where he designed, built, delivered, and installed custom cabinetry. He quickly gained a reputation as a highly respected and consummate cabinet maker. His work ethic and energy knew no bounds, and his craftsmanship, and the warmth it brought to families, will live on in hundreds of homes, from Penobscot Bay islands to Boston, Florida, and points in between.

On North Haven, where he completed over 125 jobs, customers called him, “the kitchen man, hurricane” who would “blow in and blow out!” In Florida, he was the “energizer bunny,” as he seldom slowed down. He was most happy when his customers were happy. It was said, “If humanly possible, there was nothing he couldn’t do with wood,” and it was true!

Sonny was predeceased by his parents, his 93-year-old dad in June of last year; son-in-law Paul Street; and special step-nephew, Heath Barrett.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Raeberta Jordan Myers; a daughter and son, Tracy Street of Rockland, and Scott Mayer and his wife Ann of South Portland; three grandchildren, Sam, Dan, and Sadie Street; two great-grandchildren, Jade and Emerson Street; sister-in-law Janet Jordan Simmons; step-sisters, Vicki Barrett and her husband Robert, Sheryl Sutherland; step-brother, David Verge and his wife Sandy; and uncle Arthur Pease and his wife Marie; as well as nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dick, Steve, Jim, Les, William, and Jeff.

Sonny’s family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Pen Bay Cancer Care Center and Hospice staff for their excellent care and support.

Family and friends are invited to visit Friday, February 24, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. There will be a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
