A man accused of driving a stolen vehicle and hitting law enforcement vehicles was shot and killed by law enforcement in Anthony, Texas Friday, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
Robert Rojas, a commander with El Paso County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, said the incident began around 2:30 p.m. when the Las Cruces Police Department was notified of a stolen vehicle that was driving on Interstate 10 towards Texas.
"The vehicle was located by officers from New Mexico and they followed them towards Texas," Rojas said.
The officers called for assistance from law enforcement in Texas.
Rojas said the stolen vehicle pulled into the Love's Travel Stop at 3000 Mountain Pass Blvd.
Anthony police were at the scene when the driver of the vehicle began driving toward officers and crashing into police units, Rojas said.
Officers began shooting their guns and the driver of the vehicle, who is believed to be in his 30s, was taken to the hospital where he died.
A man who was a passenger in the vehicle was not injured and was taken into custody for outstanding criminal warrants with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
Rojas said they have identified the passenger and will release more information at a later time.
No law enforcement members were injured.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating with assistance from the Texas Rangers with the Department of Public Safety.
Rojas did not say which law enforcement agency fired the shots.
He believes a New Mexico law enforcement vehicle was hit by the driver of the stolen vehicle.
The Texas Department of Public Safety initially said the incident involved a New Mexico State Police officer.
"We can expect to be here for next two to three hours," Rojas said while speaking to the media around 5:30 p.m.
