PD: Suspected red-light runner causes deadly crash in west Phoenix

Officials said emergency crews were dispatched to the intersection of 75th Avenue and Thomas Road for reports of a multi-vehicle collision nearby.

PHOENIX — Phoenix police said a suspected red-light runner might be to blame for a deadly crash in west Phoenix Friday afternoon.

Authorities said preliminary information indicates a vehicle with three people inside was traveling westbound on Thomas Road when it ran a red light and collided with a car trying to make a left turn onto 75th Avenue.

Police have identified the driver who was turning left as 25-year-old Miguel Ornelas Campos.

Phoenix police said that Campos was pronounced deceased on the scene. The three people in the other car were transported to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The engine block of Campos' vehicle was dislodged during the crash and struck a third vehicle that was traveling westbound on Thomas road. Neither of the occupants of that car were injured.

Police said that a pedestrian standing on the northwest corner of the intersection was struck by flying debris during the collision. The pedestrian was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Phoenix police said this is an active investigation. Stay with 12News for updates.
