CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Rossview High junior guard Cameryn Ward has been honored as Clarksville Now Player of the Week after his scoring display through three games.

The Hawks’ won all three of their contests during the week of Jan. 23, and part of their success can be attributed to Ward.

The junior guard kicked off the week on a high note. He dropped 24 points, a new career high, in a win against West Creek when the two Clarksville-area teams collided on Jan. 24. Ward went 8 for 12 from the field, which included hitting 2 three-pointers.

Rossview had their next game on Friday, Jan. 27, against Springfield High. The Hawks’ coaching staff limited Ward’s minutes to conserve his energy for their next contest. However, in limited minutes, the junior still went on to score 12 points during Rossview’s 84-57 win.

Rossview’s final game of the week came the following day against Tupelo High, rated as the pre-season No. 1 team in the state of Mississippi. Tupelo also have three players who have committed to play basketball at the Division-I level.

Nevertheless, Rossview’s hot streak continued, and they won the contest 69-56. Ward and Landon Hankemeier led the team in scoring, each player finishing with 19 points.

With their three wins from last week and their one win from this week, the Hawks’ winning streak has reached 12 games. During those 12 games, Rossview has won each game by double digits.

2022-23 season

Ward has played a pivotal role during the 2022-23 season for the Hawks. He is ranked second on the team in scoring with an average of 11.6 points per game.

Ward has showcased his ability to not only to score effectively, but efficiently as well. He’s shooting around 51% from the field, which includes 30% from three. In addition, he’s shooting 95% from the charity stripe.

On the offensive end, he has shown opponents he can find open teammates whenever needed. Ward is ranked third on the team in assists per game with an average of 2.3.

Rossview Head Coach Johnny Jackson credited Ward for his defense as well. Jackson described the junior guard as the team’s best on-ball defender. His statistics back that up, with Ward averaging 1.8 steals per game.

“Cam is a ball of energy,” said Jackson. “For us, he’s our second leading scorer on the team, and a guy who does a lot of the dirty work. He can be really flashy with his dunks, but he puts in a lot of work too. Right now, he’s in the gym putting in extra shots, which shows you what kind of workhorse he is.

“His athleticism really stands out on the court and he’s a very skilled ball player. He’s shooting the ball well right now and has been this whole season to be honest. It’s combination of skills that makes him such a gifted player and he works at it,” said Jackson.

Rossview (20-4) has a chance to push their winning streak to 13 games against their inner-city rival Clarksville High. The two teams are scheduled to meet on Friday, Feb. 3, with tipoff at 7:30 p.m.

Honorable mention

Several other players had great weeks on the basketball court. Here are some that merit special mention:

  • Clarksville Academy guard Trae Rideau who averaged 14.1 points and 4.1 assists per game last week.
  • Fort Campbell guard Aidan Blaskowski who scored 17 points while shooting 40% from three-point range against Hopkinsville last week.
