Contractor chosen to clean up former used oil facility in Trussville
UPDATE: June 16:The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) reported a contract was awarded to PPM Consultants, Inc. to remove and dispose of waste materials at this former used oil transport facility in Trussville.The clean up project will be done in phases, with the first phase involving planning and research of the site, review of records and costs involved.ADEM has notified the contractor to proceed with the clean up project.------------------------------------------UPDATE: March 2nd:The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) plans to clean up this former used oil transport business site in Trussville.ADEM reported the owner of the business did not respond with a plan to remove contamination, so ADEM will remove waste materials and possibly impacted soils.“It’s disappointing the property owner was unable to develop and execute a cleanup and closure plan, but ADEM will take action to ensure the site is properly cleaned up,” said ADEM Director Lance LeFleur.Initial funds for the clean up will come from the state, but ADEM plans to have the property owner reimburse all clean up costs.No timeframe was given for the clean up work to begin.-------------------------------------------------- Feb. 3:A company in Trussville has been ordered to submit a plan to close and remove contamination from a facility.The Alabama Department of Environmental Management reported a notice of violation was issued to Alabama Oil & Gas Recovery, Inc.The ADEM notice directed the used oil transportation business to take action to close its tank systems and container storage areas and remove and properly manage materials stored there.ADEM said the company stopped operations on Blackjack Road.“The Department hereby directs that Alabama Oil & Gas Recovery, Inc. submit a response detailing what actions have been or will be taken to address the violations noted above within thirty (30) days of receipt of this notice,” the Notice of Violation said. “Specifically, the Department requires that Alabama Oil and Gas Recovery, Inc. immediately secure and stabilize the site to prevent release of contaminants and to submit a written closure plan describing the steps that will be taken by Alabama Oil & Gas Recovery, Inc. to remove and properly manage all material currently in storage at the facility, decontaminate or properly manage all equipment used during the operation and closure of the facility, and remove or decontaminate all impacted soils at the facility. The closure plan must include the planned schedule for implementation of the plan.”ADEM said the site was inspected Jan. 24, and water monitoring downstream showed no impacts on water quality.
