A suspected Chinese spy balloon flew over the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and then through Canada before hovering above sensitive locations in the United States, the Pentagon announced.
The flight path of the object was revealed by the Department of Defense to the BBC and the New York Times. Details about when the balloon was first identified and how long it took the object to reach the mainland United States were not revealed.

The Canadian Armed Forces announced on Thursday that it was working with its U.S. counterparts to track the movements of the balloon, reflecting its flight path over its territory, a press release announced. It also noted a possible second balloon over its territory.
“Canadians are safe, and Canada is taking steps to ensure the security of its airspace, including the monitoring of a potential second incident. NORAD, the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence, and other partners have been assessing the situation and working in close coordination,” the release read.
“Canada’s intelligence agencies are working with American partners and continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard Canada’s sensitive information from foreign intelligence threats,” the statement added.
