Protecting Good program builds fortified roofs for Birmingham residents
The Protecting Good program gives homeowners funds to install storm-resistant roofs through a partnership between the Alabama Department of Insurance, Protective Life Corporation, the city of Birmingham, UAB, Neighborhood Housing Services, and Habitat for Humanity for Greater Birmingham.
The program represents the opportunity for qualified homes to receive up to $10,000 for a roof replacement to the fortified standard in order to help protect against wind damage.
Civic and corporate leaders, including Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and Protective Life CEO Richard Bielen, visited residents who participated in the program on Thursday.
Barbara Thomas, a Norwood resident, received a new roof. She says many of the recipients in her neighborhood are older adults.
"Their home in Norwood is all they know, and I'm just grateful they are able to stay in their homes because of a program like this," Thomas said.
The goal of the program is to increase the value of homes and make the community a place that brings people and keeps people.
“My thanks is small compared to what they have done for this community,” Thomas said.
