Protecting Good program builds fortified roofs for Birmingham residents
ON ALL THREE COMMITTEES JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME. SOME PEOPLE IN BIRMINGHAM ARE GETTING BRAND NEW ROOFS TO STAY DRY. THIS IS ALL PART OF A LARGER EFFORT TO REVITALIZE HISTORIC NORTHSIDE NEIGHBORHOODS. WVTM 13 APP MATTIE DAVIS HAS THE DEVELOPMENT IN THE AREA AND THE INVESTMENT MADE TO THE PEOPLE IN NORWOOD. BARBARA THOMAS LIVES IN THIS HOME BEHIND ME. SHE’S BEEN IN IT FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS NOW. TODAY, SHE IS THANKFUL FOR A NEW 45 STANDARD ROOF. THIS ROOF CAN PROTECT HOMES FACING UP TO E.F., TWO LEVEL WINDS AND THEIR ROOFS LIKE THIS. THROUGHOUT NORTH SIDE NEIGHBORHOODS THAT PROTECT GOOD PROGRAM GIVING HOMEOWNERS AS MUCH AS $25,000 TO REPAIR HOMES AND INSTALL STORM RESISTANT ROOFS. FUNDING FOR THIS COMES FROM A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE. THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM, AS WELL AS PROTECTIVE LIFE CORPORATION, WHO SAYS THEY WANT TO BE MORE THAN JUST A NAME ON A STADIUM. WE ALSO RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS GOING TO IMPACT THE NEIGHBORHOODS AROUND THE STADIUM. AND WE WANTED TO HELP THEIR LIVES BE IMPROVED. LEADERS FROM THESE GROUPS VISITING RENOVATED HOMES TODAY. IT’S NOT ABOUT JUST ATTRACTING PEOPLE HERE FOR ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES, BUT ALSO THE RESIDENTS WHO LIVE IN THIS FOOTPRINT, MAKING SURE THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE AND THRIVE AS WELL. BARBARA THOMAS TELLS US THE COMMUNITY IS OCCUPIED BY MOSTLY SENIORS. THEIR HOMES IN NORWOOD IS ALL THAT THEY KNOW. The Protecting Good program gives homeowners funds to install storm-resistant roofs through a partnership between the Alabama Department of Insurance, Protective Life Corporation, the city of Birmingham, UAB, Neighborhood Housing Services, and Habitat for Humanity for Greater Birmingham. The program represents the opportunity for qualified homes to receive up to $10,000 for a roof replacement to the fortified standard in order to help protect against wind damage.Civic and corporate leaders, including Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and Protective Life CEO Richard Bielen, visited residents who participated in the program on Thursday. Barbara Thomas, a Norwood resident, received a new roof. She says many of the recipients in her neighborhood are older adults. "Their home in Norwood is all they know, and I'm just grateful they are able to stay in their homes because of a program like this," Thomas said. The goal of the program is to increase the value of homes and make the community a place that brings people and keeps people. “My thanks is small compared to what they have done for this community,” Thomas said.
