Officials with Austin Community College have made the decision to close the South Austin and Riverside campuses on Feb. 3 due to ongoing power outages in the area.

All other ACC campuses will open on a regular schedule on Feb. 3, said Sydney Pruitt, office of college relations and marketing spokesperson.

Since the winter storm first entered Central Texas on Jan. 31, Austin Energy crews have been working through icy conditions to repair and restore outages caused by the severe weather. Most of the outages have been due to downed trees, according to reports. As of 8 a.m. Feb. 3, Austin Energy was reporting about 1,600 customers without power.

Austin Energy officials encourage residents to stay safe during the outage by following these tips:
  • Avoid downed power lines;
  • Check breakers if it is a safe option;
  • Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns;
  • Follow safety precautions with portable emergency generators;
  • Keep refrigerator doors closed; and
  • Turn off major appliances.
