Brian Cashman and the Yankees are reportedly taking no chances with Luis Severino’s health this year.
According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, the oft-injured righty will not be pitching for the Dominican Republic in this year’s World Baseball Classic, because the Yankee general manager did not permit him to pitch.
Severino is coming off yet another season impacted by injury, as a lat strain limited him down the stretch of 2022, when Severino was openly frustrated with the team’s overly cautious approach to his recovery. But Severino was coming back from Tommy John surgery, which he suffered multiple setbacks on his way back, and had pitched in just 18 innings in the three previous seasons combined.
The Yankees are hoping Severino will be a part of an elite starting rotation that includes ace Gerrit Cole, newcomer Carlos Rodon, and 2022 All-Star Nestor Cortes.
