Atlanta United have allowed winger Edwin Mosquera to leave the club on loan to Argentine side Defensa y Justicia for the 2023 season.

Mosquera only arrived at Mercedes-Benz Stadium about six months ago from Deportivo Independiente Medellín in his native Colombia, going on to make 12 appearances for the Five Stripes at the tail end of the 2022 MLS season.

The 21-year-old held a Under-22 Initiative slot on Atlanta United's roster alongside Santiago Sosa, Franco Ibarra, and Erik Lopez. With MLS rules stating clubs are only allowed three Under-22 Initiative slots each, one had to be moved.

Mosquera is one of a host of offseason departures from Atlanta United, who are overhauling their roster after missing out on the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second time in three years last season.

Alongside Mosquera, the Five Stripes have said goodbye to George Campbell, Alan Franco, Emerson Hyndman, Marcelino Moreno, and iconic striker Josef Martinez - the latter joining Inter Miami.

Atlanta United have added former Columbus Crew forward Derrick Etienne Jr via free agency and Peru international center-back Luis Abram from Spanish side Granada. They also continue to be linked with Greek forward Giorgos Giakoumakis from Scottish giants Celtic.

The Five Stripes begin their 2023 campaign at home to the San Jose Earthquakes on February 25.
