DeMeco Ryans In, But Texans Coach Joe Danna Lands New Job with Bills

The Houston Texans are losing safeties coach Joe Danna, who was an underrated piece for a surprising secondary this season.

The Buffalo Bills have hired Houston Texans safeties coach Joe Danna to the same role, per an announcement Thursday from the Bills.

Danna spent just one year with the Texans this past season during a 3-13-1 campaign. He'll now be departing as new head coach DeMeco Ryans arrives.

But despite finishing with the second-worst record in the league, the struggles the team experienced as a whole weren't as abundant for Danna and the secondary.

Led by standout rookies in safety Jalen Pitre and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., the Texans secondary surprised tons of doubters by allowing the 10th-fewest passing yards per game (209.3).

Pitre, who finished the season with a team-high five interceptions, gifted the pick he made against former Texan and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson to Danna in the 27-14 loss on Dec. 4.

With 15 years of experience in the league, Danna can bring some valuable knowledge to a Bills secondary that performed a bit below expectations this past season compared to 2021 production. Before his time with the Texans, he spent five seasons in the AFC South with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he found himself working as the coach of the defensive backs, safeties and assistant secondary coach.

He also served as a defensive backs coach for the New York Jets in 2015-16 after time with the Atlanta Falcons, where he began his NFL coaching career as a defensive assistant in 2008.
