David Tepper Admits He Made a Mistake

To succeed as a business owner or even in life for that matter, you have to fail over and over and over and over again. Billionaires don't just become rich overnight. They don't get it right from the very beginning. They learn from their mistakes and failures. 

This is why Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper is one of the most successful businessman in the world. He isn't afraid to admit when he's wrong and that's what he did earlier this week during a post press conference scrum with the media after he officially introduced Frank Reich as the organization's sixth head coach.

"It's great to have a CEO coach. It's preferable to have a coach that is really extraordinary on one side of the ball or the other side of the ball. It makes you have to fill those key coordinator positions when you have that," Tepper said. "I think it's a mistake to have a CEO-type head coach. That's a mistake. Just in general. I think we want to get someone who's really good on offense or really good on defense. And we think that Frank is really good on offense."

Although some are taking it as a slight at former Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, it was really more about how those types of coaches typically don't pan out. Rhule is going to have a tremendous amount of success at Nebraska because that is his style and it fits the college level perfectly. 

In the NFL, it's all about the brainiacs, if you will. Just take a look around the league.

 Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Andy Reid, Matt LaFleur, and so on. If you have an offensive mind like that leading your team, you have a much better chance to be successful. Conversely, a strong defensive-minded coach such as Sean McDermott, Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and the up and coming DeMeco Ryans can get you there as well. Having a guy that just kind of oversees the whole operation isn't going to lead you to the promised land.
