It’s a big list foodies look forward to every year. Yelp just released its annual list of the top 100 restaurants in the U.S. and three Michigan eateries have made the cut on the app’s 10th listing of this kind, including a current James Beard Award semifinalist.

To come up with its top 100 restaurants list, Yelp says it first reached out to people on its app and asked them what their favorite places to dine were. It then ranked each restaurant by the total number of submissions, ratings, reviews and geographic representation.

The number one spot is located in Los Angeles at Broken Mouth, which is a Hawaiian-Korean cafe. The restaurant features food from owner Tim Lee’s family dinners and his uncle’s Korean restaurant in Honolulu where Lee once worked.

NUMBER 28

The highest ranked restaurant in Michigan is Baobab Fare, coming in at number 28 on the list. Located at 6568 Woodward Avenue, Suite 100 in Detroit, the restaurant’s chefs, Hamissi Mamba and Nadia Nijimbere, are currently semifinalists for the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes.

“Their hearty stews served with ingredients such as fried plantains, yellow beans, and coconut rice “are delicious and very healthy,” said one Yelp reviewer. “I haven’t had something this different yet this tasty in a long time. It’s like discovering your palate all over again,” said another.

Popular dishes include: Nyumbani, a richly spiced dish of beef long-simmered in a ripe tomato sauce; Ugali, tender East African swallow; Kuku, pan-fried chicken in mustard-onion sauce and Intore, eggplant stew.

Baobab Fare is open Tuesdays - Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it’s closed on Mondays.

NUMBER 38

Coming in at number 38 on Yelp’s top 100 restaurant list is House of Falafel located at 21095 Farmington Road in Farmington Hills. This place is known for its beef and chicken shawarma, kafta kabobs, hummus, tabouli, fattoush salad, spicy-sweet vegan-friendly lentil and of course, falafels.

“Founder David K. grew up in the business,” wrote Yelp. “His parents owned a Mediterranean restaurant in San Francisco for more than 45 years, which he says was “known for our award-winning falafel.” He resurrected the family recipe loaded with verdant parsley and a special spice blend and serves it to devoted fans here. Each falafel ball is fried to order so it’s hot and crispy.”

House of Falafel is open Tuesdays from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m., Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. It’s closed Sundays and Mondays.

NUMBER 74

The final Michigan restaurant on Yelp’s top 100 list is Chadd’s Bistro coming in at number 74. The restaurant is currently closed as the owners are moving the restaurant from Rochester Hills to a bigger place at 46858 Dequindre Road in Shelby Township. The owner tells MLive they don’t have an exact date yet, but are planning on opening in mid to late March.

Chadd’s is known for its sandwiches and uses artisan bread baked locally. One of its most popular sandwiches is the Hardcore Joe: Chicken breast grilled in Cajun spices, topped with muenster cheese, grilled jalapeno, lettuce, tomato, red onion and cucumber wasabi ranch on grilled country buttermilk.

Chadd’s serves sandwiches with roast beef, chicken, ham, turkey, corned beef, pastrami and more. There’s also grilled ham and cheese and its Elvis Impersonator, a peanut butter and banana sandwiche with a half pound of bacon on grilled country buttermilk.
