The words Cajun culture and Lafayette are synonymous in the modern day. But can you believe that this rich history and culture didn’t exist until the 1970s and 1980s?. Through the public artworks of Robert Dafford and the resurgence in zydeco, Lafayette reshaped itself into a cultural destination known around the country for the arts.

Cajun culture became cool in Lafayette in the '80s. Robert Dafford's artwork helped with that.

The Leadership Institute of Acadiana will partner with the Acadiana Veteran Alliance to offer free registration for the LIA’s Acadiana OnBoard and Intro Lafayette programs. The AVA will sponsor registration for the first three veterans to apply for the programs this year. Upcoming dates include May 16 for Acadiana OnBoard and May 25-26 for Intro Lafayette, AVA founder and CEO Andrew Ward said.

After a few months on the job, Southern University president-chancellor Dennis Shields said he can see parallels between Southern and Columbia University in New York. “We’re two remarkable institutions with a lot of history," he said. "Obviously, Columbia is one of the leading universities in the world, not just in the United States. But there are similarities between the two of us in some ways."
