N.J. wrestlers in the national college rankings for Feb. 2: Rutgers adds new face

Billy Janzer of Rutgers (right) and Ethan Laird of Rider wrestle during the NCAA wrestling match between No. 18 Rutgers and Rider in Lawrence Township on Sunday, January 8, 2023.

Can you call it a hot streak?

Billy Janzer, a redshirt junior for Rutgers and former two-time state champion from Delsea, wrestled his way back into the national rankings this week following back-to-back wins against Michigan and Northwestern. Against Northwestern, Janzer downed No. 28 Andrew Davison in overtime. It was a victory that came a week after Janzer pushed Michigan State’s 14th-ranked Cameron Caffey to the brink before losing in sudden victory.

Janzer missed all of last season after undergoing back surgery. He was a national qualifier as a redshirt freshman during the 2019-2020 season and finished the year ranked as high as No. 18.

This week, he joined FloWrestling’s honorable mention list, making him one of 36 wrestlers with ties to New Jersey to be ranked amongst the best in the nation. Check out the rest of the wrestlers and their movement below. For our purposes, the wrestlers below either wrestled at New Jersey high schools or compete for one of New Jersey’s three Division 1 programs: Rutgers, Rider or Princeton.
