Night Court will be adding more cases to its docket: NBC has renewed the sequel series for Season 2, TVLine has learned.
“It’s so rewarding to have audiences respond and return to a show in which they have such incredibly warm feelings, and, more broadly, it’s testament to how broadcast is still a huge driver of communal viewing,” NBC’s president of scripted content Lisa Katz said in a statement. “A huge thank you to our studio partners, a wonderful cast, incredibly talented writers and producers, and a crew that has transformed a lower Manhattan courtroom into a true family.”
The continuation of the 1984-92 courtroom comedy stars Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) as Judge Abby Stone, who presides over the same New York City night court as her late father Harry Stone (played on the original series by Harry Anderson, who died in 2018). John Larroquette reprises his role as attorney Dan Fielding, who now serves as the night court’s public defender. The supporting cast includes India de Beaufort as prosecutor Olivia, Kapil Talwakar as clerk Neil and Lacretta as bailiff Gurgs.
Rauch also serves as an executive producer on the series, along with Dan Rubin (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), who writes the series as well.
A self-starter on Tuesday nights, Night Court debuted last month to 7.4 million total viewers and a 1.0 demo rating, making it the most-watched and highest-rated (regularly scheduled) premiere of this broadcast TV season. Further, it was the No. 1 comedy premiere of the 2022-23 season on broadcast or cable, and it drew the largest audience for any comedy premiere since ABC’s The Conners in fall 2018.
TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Are you happy to spend more time in Night Court? Drop your thoughts on the series so far in the comments.
Shocking… nor at all… I really like this reboot.
Not a top tier comedy series for me, but it’s definitely my favorite broadcast network comedy currently airing. Hope the characters continue to develop even more with season 2.
I’m ecstatic about this and all the other renewals of shows I look forward to every week. I know it’s not as great as the original, but it still has its moments that make me laugh. Thanks, NBC!
Yep. It’s a win in my book because although it doesn’t touch the original, it still makes me laugh.
I agree although it doesn’t touch the original, it’s still a very fine comedy for today’s times. I think the people who don’t enjoy it are unfairly comparing it to the original one too much. I enjoy it very much right now and it makes me laugh too.
Good for them. I’m hoping time and maybe an additional cast member or two will help build this little comedy. John Larroquette’s Dan Fielding is what I tune in for each week. I like Melissa Rauch (loved her as Bernadette in TBBT), but her Abby Stone is a tad annoying for me. Hopefully she can dial down the cutesy a bit. Wishing them nothing but the best.
I agree they need to add an additional cast member or two like you said next season like the original series did. Dan is killing it right now as I like how his character is appropriate for his age as I loved his scenes with Wendie Malick this week. You know what’s crazy though about Melissa, I never liked her as Bernadette on BBT though as she was annoying on there to me. Her and Blossom on Call Me Kat are much better in their current series. Melissa has a cute character on this show but she can still be improved a little bit. I do think the cute factor needs better balance but I’m okay with it so far it will get better and better like every other comedy. I remember not liking The Conners in season 1 but it got way better in season 2 to me.
Great news. I was iffy on the first 2 episodes, but it has steadily improved, and this week’s was legit funny.
Yeah, it’s steadily improved every episode which is a great sign as most new comedies have to find their footing after the first couple of episodes so that’s normal. I think this has a chance to be a really great quality comedy in another season or two.
The Olivia character needs to be reworked like how Leslie Knoop in Parks& Recs and Dan in Night Court were. Both of these characters were tweaked after the first 13 episodes, the same thing needs to happen here or just get a new actress and character.
I agree but at the same time I think Olivia has gotten better every episode. Keep her in scenes with the Baliff because her chemistry with the Baliff is pretty good right now. I would still tweak her a little bit like you said but she’s improving.
Really enjoying this show! Glad it got a second season!
So Happy! My family and I look forward to it every week
More John Laroquette is always welcome. He is still such a great actor.
John is doing very well in this reboot as I loved his scenes with Wendie Malick and Melissa Rauch. I’m so glad he’s still around today to help launch the show.
Night Court Reboot – Good idea – Had high expectations but got poor delivery. Drop the laugh track, Soooo annoying and TOTALLY not necessary! If it’s dropped, maybe I’ll give it another try, until then, I’m not
Like the original, it’s filmed in front of a live studio audience.
It may be but it is enhanced with a laugh track. They really need to dial that back, it’s too loud and used too often for jokes that fall flat.
You’re assuming that everyone in the audience agrees with you that the jokes fall flat. People have different senses of humor. Don’t project your opinion onto other people.
If we don’t get to see what Aristotle Nostradamus Shannon is doing at all this season, here’s hoping we do next season. What I found surprising is that Moll’s in his 80s.
How Wonderful!!! How Great this show has been renewed. This show is a breath of fresh air, compared to many other stupid ridiculous shows on TV. Thank you.
I’m betting there will be at least a couple of cast changes before the second season. Same thing happened with the original.
I was wondering about this too, fans have been very vocal about who is working and who isn’t.
But I hope everyone just stays and they tweak the characters a bit for season 2 rather than anyone getting let go.
I agree guys there will be an additional character or two added in next season but I’d definitely keep everybody and continue to improve the weakest characters on the show.
The show is okay. Not appointment television, but I do watch it. It helps that there’s nothing else on Tuesday nights.
Now that the show has been renewed for season two, they can now bring Marcia Warfield and Richard Moll back as guest stars or cameo appearances.
Richard Moll has repeatedly said he would not appear. Dont know about Marsha Warfield.
I have to say while I was glad to see the show come back, I’ve been more than a little disappointed in the quality. In addition, some characters disappeared entirely and were replaced with unfunny characters that seem to be filling today’s quotas instead of adding to the show. Dan changed too much for my taste. The others simply aren’t funny
I think that’s honestly the problem for viewers like you. I think comparing it too much to the original is not a good thing. It should be treated as a separate individual series. The show is nowhere near perfect because it still has a lot of flaws that need to be fixed in the next season but I do think it’s improved each episode. Characters are getting better with each episode but they need to be improved. I like Olivia’s scenes with the Baliff so far and Dan is acting like somebody his age. They do need to make a couple of additions for next season though to the cast.
So happy!!! Love this show!!
Ugh….it’s lousy. Pretty flat and not very comical. And the lead actress isn’t working, at least in my opinion.
I totally disagree it’s been pretty good so far, but this is your opinion, so I’ll respect it.
Luckily for you, you are not required to watch it
LOL
Agreed & am already over it myself.
Wow I guess they will renew any crappie show
Great renewal and not surprising since the ratings have started out really strong. It’s great to see NBC killing it with multi-cams this season as Lopez vs. Lopez is off to a great start as well.
I see that people understand that if you don’t compare it to the original, you will enjoy it. I feel like it’s gotten better every episode and chemistry between the actors is getting better. I’m liking it so far as it’s my favorite network comedy right now.
I would like to see NBC reboot some more comedies from the 80s and 90s even the ones that never aired on their network like Designing Women, The Nanny, Step By Step, and Alice. Also ones that aired on their network like The Facts of Life, Gimme a Break!, Silver Spoons, Wings, Family Ties, Saved By the Bell redo as a multi-cam, Just Shoot Me!, Caroline in the City, Suddenly Susan, Frasier, and Friends with the Emma character and other kids.
Great news… but I’m still hoping that Bob & June Wheeler will make an appearance! (Given how Brent Spiner’s appearing in Picard S3, if not this season then next.)
I just couldn’t handle the laugh track on this show. It is so intrusive that it overpowers the dialogue!
Dude it’s a multi-cam comedy and not a laugh track. It’s a studio audience, you act like you haven’t seen these types of comedies before.
What part of “Filmed before a live studio audience” DO–YOU–NOT–UNDERSTAND??
I’m sure it is ‘enhanced’
That may be, but sweetening is not the same thing as using a laugh track. The OP is just reaching for an excuse to dump on the series.
Enjoying this one, so glad to hear it.
Yay Yay Yay. I’m so happy.
I will keep watching but so far I haven’t liked it so much. It just is missing something for me that the original had. Some spark that makes it less interesting and less funny.
