Police on both sides of Bristol are investigating after items were taken out of vehicles at several apartment complexes Wednesday night.
Police say the thefts occurred from over 20 cars that were left unlocked at complexes like Ridgecrest and Monarch Place in Bristol, Virginia.
Maj. Darryl Milligan with the Bristol, Virginia Police Department says the suspect seemed to target vehicles they could just pull on the handle and get into.
He says investigators served a search warrant Thursday morning, but are still working to process the items and information.
Milligan told News 5 it was a variety of items taken from the vehicles.
"It's just about anything. School books, notebooks, laptops. cell phones, cell phone chargers, some types of clothing. But then some of it we found abandoned and in other places just thrown out in the street and things like that."
Milligan says police in Bristol, Tennessee, are investigating similar thefts.
However, he could not say if the thefts on both sides of the state line are connected. At this point, a suspect has not been identified.
