The Hoboken Police Department Wants You, to Apply

MIDDLETOWN, NJ: On Wednesday, March 29, detectives from Hazlet Township Police Department arrested a 17-year-old Middletown resident, after executing a search warrant at his home. 

Evidence gathered included a loaded handgun, from an armed robbery which was allegedly committed in Hazlet,on March 18. On that date, the suspect entered a restaurant in Hazlet Township, and confronted four juveniles who were dining. The male suspect assaulted one of the juveniles and stole his cell phone. Then he attempted to steal the cell phone of another. During the  assault, the accused dropped a handgun onto the floor. After picking up the gun he left the scene in a vehicle, allegedly driven by his 16-year-old girlfriend.

Police investigation led to identifying both teens and a search warrant was processed. The 17-year-old male juvenile was charged with 1st Degree Armed Robbery, 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, 2nd Degree Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, 3rd Degree Resisting Arrest, 2 counts of 4th Degree Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Disorderly Persons Offense of Simple Assault.

The suspect was placed in Middlesex County Youth Detention Center pending a future hearing.

MONTCLAIR, NJ - Two men got into a dispute after a homeowner tried to video a man urinating on his lawn, police said.

On Monday, a resident of Glenridge Avenue in Montclair called police to report a "dispute" between himself and a man he witnessed urinating on his property.

The Montclair Police Department has reported that the homeowner reported seeing a suspicious 2004 GMC Envoy parked on his street. A man with a grey puffy jacket and black shorts walked up to the house, got out of the car, and promptly started emptying himself on the lawn.

The homeowner told police that he had attempted to photograph the man and his vehicle, but that the man had intervened, slapped the phone from the resident's hand, and swung a punch, but missed.

According to the authorities, the man then returned to his vehicle and drove off. No additional details were available.

Superior Court Judge Andrea G. Carter, presiding in Middlesex County, sentenced 60-year-old Kevin Bethea on March 17th to 20 years in state prison without parole.

If ever Bethea is released, he must register as a Megan's Law sex offender and have supervised parole for the remainder of life, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said Tuesday.

On Sept. 30, 2016, Carteret police were dispatched to a borough home on reports of a sexual assault. The home’s female occupant told officers that Bethea assaulted, threatened and attempted to rape her, leading to his arrest.

A jury convicted Bethea on July 22, 2022 for attempted sexual assault, two counts of terroristic threats, one count of criminal restraint and criminal sexual contact, authorities said. Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Pridgen presented evidence against Bethea at trial.

Judge Instructs Millburn Township to File Feld Lawsuit Answer in 30 Days

KENILWORTH, NJ - On Tuesday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. the Kenilworth Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad were dispatched to the Garden State Parkway to the report of a vehicle on fire.

According to the departments social media page, Engine 63 and Squad 2 arrived to find the contents in the bed of a pickup truck fully involved. The crew from Engine 63 crew were able to swiftly knock down the fire while Squad 2 worked on overhauling the contents in the bed.

SAYREVILLE NJ — Tom Pollando, the long-time former Sayreville Borough Democratic chairman, has been indicted on various charges along with his son and daughter-in-law, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and police Chief Daniel Plumacker announced today, March 30.

Over the course of an investigation in July and August of last year, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office conducted electronic surveillance of the XXXV Gentlemen’s Club (Club 35) in Sayreville. Detectives say they observed Pollando accept several thousands of dollars in cash and heard him claiming he would attempt to use his political clout to influence an ongoing criminal case.

NUTLEY NJ - Members of the Nutley Fire Department were training Monday at the soon-to-be demolished home on Prospect St. 

The action, caught on camera by a TAPinto Nutley reader, is part of the continuous training for firefighters. In these exercises, firefighters can break down doors, cut holes in roofs, smash windows, and anything else required to rescue residents and extinguish fires. 

In these situations, the Township of Nutley works with the owner of the property to use it for training. Arrangements are made in advance so if there are any injuries, the homeowner is not liable.

The house will eventually be torn down and replaced with a new structure. 
    

Nutley Fire Department Trains at House Before Demolition

Union, NJ

UNION, NJ – One person is in critical condition after a second floor fire on Chestnut Street Wednesday afternoon.

According to Union Fire Chief Greg Ricciardi, firefighters were called to 601 Chestnut Street, on the corner of Crawford Terrace, at about 12:15 and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of a three-story apartment building.  Firefighters forced entry into the apartment where the fire appeared and found a victim, who was transported to Saint Barnabas Medical Center in critical condition.

Ricciardi said firefighters conducted an aggressive attack of the fire and was able to hold it to the originating apartment.  Officials from the Building Department deemed the apartment uninhabitable, but occupancy is permitted in the rest of the building.

County investigators were on the scene to conduct an investigation. Ricciardi said one firefighter was injured when removing the victim. He was transported to Union Hospital and is undergoing evaluation. Chestnut street was closed for about two hours.
        

One Person in Critical Condition/One Firefighter Injured in Chestnut Street Fire

UNION, NJ – A tractor trailer and a dump truck collided on Route 78 eastbound Tuesday afternoon, leaving the driver of the dump truck dead, Union Fire Chief Greg Ricciardi said.

At just after 12:30 p.m., firefighters responded to the scene of the accident on Route 78 in the eastbound express lanes on the Springfield border.  Ricciardi said a collision occurred between a tractor trailer with an empty trailer and a dump truck with a full load of gravel.  The collision caused an explosion and an immediate fire.  The driver of the tractor trailer escaped relatively unharmed, Ricciardi said, but the dump truck driver was unable to exit the vehicle and was dead upon first responder’s arrival. 

The fire was contained and extinguished with multiple handlines and foam. A county water tanker from Linden assisted with water supply. Ricciardi said firefighters were on scene for several hours.  He said firefighters left after four hours on the scene, but State Police officers remained to conduct the accident investigation. 

Extensive traffic resulted due to the backup on both Rt.78 east and westbound. The traffic spilled over and impacted other highways and roads all around the area.

NUTLEY, NJ - Rumors have been circulating about the redevelopment of the northern end of Franklin Ave. in Nutley since well before the Ciccolini Bros sold their last clothes washer. 

This week a rumor was spread on social media claiming the "project has been canceled." The rumor received a great deal of attention, with many residents replying with additional rumors and speculation.
