(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Three suspects were arrested in Chicago this week for allegedly stealing more than $1,600 in perfume and other items from a west suburban Walgreens and leading police on a high-speed chase.
The incident began around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday in Willowbrook after Kyla Simons, 20, and 23-year-old Duane Robinson entered the Walgreens store at 501 Plainfield Road with Monteriana Williams, 20, officials said.
Robinson allegedly asked a store clerk to double-bag 21 bottles of perfume totaling $1,668.58 before grabbing the bag and fleeing the store. Simmons and Williams allegedly took additional items that included candy, bandages and Neosporin before fleeing, authorities said.
A nearby Darien police officer tried to pull over a vehicle sought in the crime, officials said, but it did a U-turn on Route 83 and attempted to elude police by reaching speeds of up to 75 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone.
Several law enforcement agencies and a Chicago police helicopter gave chase. The suspects’ vehicle – allegedly driven by Simmons -- ultimately was located on Chicago’s West Side within the hour.
“It is alleged that when Cook County Sheriff’s deputies pulled in front of the vehicle, Simmons put the car in reverse and crashed into another officer’s vehicle causing damage,” the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The three suspects were taken into custody, and police say they found the 21 bottles of perfume and $5,000 in cash inside the vehicle.
On Wednesday, a DuPage County judge set bond for Simmons at $75,000. The Chicago woman is charged with burglary, retail theft and aggravated fleeing and eluding. Robinson, also of Chicago, is charged with burglary, retail theft and robbery; his bond was set at $50,000.
Bond for Williams, charged with burglary and retail theft, was set at $10,000, officials said.
“The allegations that these three defendants entered a retail store, stole merchandise and then put the public at risk by leading authorities on a high-speed chase through a residential area, will not be tolerated in DuPage County,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.
