A Graveside Memorial Service for 96 year-old Paul Eveland of Oskaloosa will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Military honors will be presented by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at Langkamp Funeral Chapel on Friday. A procession will form at 9:45 a.m. to travel to the cemetery.

The Indianola HyVee is honoring a long-time employee’s retirement in a special way, naming a street in the Indianola HyVee parking lot. Store Manager Nate Fehl tells KNIA News Cindy Oehlert has worked for the Indianola HyVee for the last 50 years and announced her intention to retire, and now commuters entering the Indianola HyVee parking lot near the south side of the building will now be driving on Cindy Oehlert Boulevard.

The annual Indianola Spring Cleanup begins April 24th, running through April 28th. Items will be picked up on recycling day, and must be out on the curb by 7am, and only large items not hauled through the weekly service will be picked up, and does not include construction materials, railroad ties, or tires, and items that are bulky and difficult to handle such as swing sets, which must be cut up or dismantled into pieces no longer than four feet. The Knoxville and Indianola Girls Soccer Squads opened up the spring sports seasons for both programs in 2023 on Monday night on The Pitch at Randy Wilson Track in Knoxville, and it was the Indians who came out on top 4-0 over Knoxville. It did not take long for Indianola to get the scoring start just 9:00 into the match when Angelika Miller scored to make it 1-0, then with just under 2:00 left in the 1st half, Remy Sivertson allowed Indianola to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Camden Palmer and Adrianne Sinclair put in goals in the 2nd half to make the final tally. Knoxville is 0-1 on the season and will host Grinnell on Friday while Indianola is 1-0 and will travel to Southeast Polk on Thursday.

The Pella Police Department is hosting the next Citizens Public Safety Academy beginning in May. The Citizens Public Safety Academy will incorporate components from the Pella Police Department, as well as the Pella Fire Department and Pella Community Ambulance. This class is free to attend. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6 P.M. beginning May 10th. Several Area Track and Field teams begin their outdoor season’s today with four boys squads and three girls teams competing in different locations. The Pella Christian boys track and field team hosts fellow KNIA/KRLS area schools Knoxville, PCM, and Pleasantville in the PC Boys Early Season Meet tonight. Meanwhile, the Pella Christian, PCM, and Pleasantville girls track and field squads make the trip south to compete at Centerville.

The official Disc Golf Pro Tour is coming back to Indianola in 2023, the third straight year of hosting the event at Pickard Park. TruBank has announced they are again sponsoring the event for the second straight year, and is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Indianola this summer, and will be one of just 20 events held nationwide as part of the tour in 2023. TruBank also announced last year that as part of the sponsorship, the prize totals will be even for both the men’s and women’s category. The Des Moines Challenge will be June 23-25 in Pickard Park.

While it’s about a month later than normal, the Pella City Council held the first of two annual budget workshops Tuesday. For fiscal year 2024, City Administration proposed a plan that would spend $55.7 million – or an increase of 19%, starting this July. This new plan includes a proposal to maintain the current property tax rate at $10.20 per $1,000 of valuation and an increase of water rates of 7%.
