Hammond man arrested after ramming police cars with stolen jeep

MUNSTER, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Hammond man was arrested in Munster last night after, police say, he rammed police vehicles in a stolen Jeep and an officer fired shots at the Jeep.

State Police are investigating the incident that started when a Munster officer identified a Jeep SUV at a gas station as having been stolen.

Other officers pulled into the gas station at Ridge Road and Manor Avenue. Police say a man got into the Jeep and started ramming the police cars.

An officer fired at the Jeep. There were five bullet holes in the windshield, four in a tight group directly where the driver would be sitting.

The man was not hit. He was chased on foot. Police used a taser to stop him.

He was checked out at a hospital and is now in the Lake County Jail.He’s identified as 30-year-old Roy Viverette from Hammond.

State Police said he has an active full extradition warrant out of Cook County for what police describe as “numerous offenses in Illinois.”
