The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the Tanglewood Festival 2023 season.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be solely on vocal and operatic performances.

The Knights, under Eric Jacobsen, will present a new work by Chris Thile, who will also be the vocal soloist, as well as Jessie Montgomery’s “Source Code.”

Performance Date: June 29, 2023

Nicholas Phan leads a program entitled “Immersion: Themes from Ragtime,” taking on Nico Muhly’s “Stranger.”

Performance Date: July 8, 2023

Julia Bullock will perform Jessie Montgomery’s “Freedom Songs.” The program will also feature Hilary Hahn performing Brahms’ violin concert. Andris Nelsons conducts the world premiere of Iman Habibi’s “Zhiân.”

Performance Date: July 9, 2023

Julia Bullock will give a vocal recital.

Performance Date: July 13, 2023

Nelsons will lead a concert performance of “Così fan tutte” starring Nicole Cabell, Meigui Zhang, Amitai Pati, Elliot Madore, Patrick Carfizzi, and Kate Lindsey. James Darrah directs.

Performance Date: July 15, 2023

Nelsons will also conduct “Carmina Burana” with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Soloists include Reginald Mobley, Erin Morley, and Will Liverman. The program also includes Beethoven’s “Leonore Overture No. 3.”

Performance Date: July 16, 2023

Nelsons conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with TMC conducting fellows leading performances of music by Bacewicz and Kodály.

Performance Date: July 17, 2023

Nicholas Mulroy, Hera Hyesang Park, Dashon Burton, and Isaiah Bell star in Händel’s “Acis and Galatea” directed by Aria Umezawa and conducted by Richard Egarr. The Philharmonia Baroque will perform.  

Performance Date: July 20, 2023

Giancarlo Guerrero will lead the orchestra in a performance of Julia Wolfe’s “Her Story” with the Lorelei Ensemble. Mahler’s First Symphony will also be on the program.

Saili Oak will lead a program of music by Reena Esmail.

Performance Date: July 29, 2023 

Ellen Reid’s “When the World As You’ve Known it Doesn’t Exist” will star Eliza Bagg, Martha Cluver, and Sonja DuToit Tenglad. BSO Assistant Conductor Anna Rakitina will lead the performance which also features Joshua Bell playing Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1.

Performance Date: July 30, 2023

Susanna Mälkki will lead a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Amanda Majeski, J’Nai Bridges, Stephen Costello, and Ryan Speedo Green as the soloists. The performance will also feature Tippett’s “A Child of Our Time.”
