The verdict is in for So Help Me Todd: CBS has renewed the mother-son legal drama for Season 2, TVLine has learned.
Thus far this season (with Live+7 playback), So Help Me Todd is averaging 6.3 million total viewers — making it the third-most watched freshman series of this TV season — and a 0.5 demo rating. Out of the 13 dramas CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks 11th in audience while besting only NCIS: Los Angeles in the demo.
Created by Scott Prendergast, So Help Me Todd follows a by-the-book lawyer who hires her loose-cannon son as a private investigator at her firm. As you can imagine, shenanigans ensue.
The series stars Skylar Astin as Todd Wright, Marcia Gay Harden as Margaret Wright, Madeline Wise as Allison, Tristen J. Winger as Lyle, Inga Schlingmann as Susan and Rosa Evangelina Arredondo as Francey.
“So Help Me Todd has charmed viewers with the incomparable chemistry between Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach says in a statement. “With the series’ unique blend of captivating legal drama, laugh-out-loud humor and intriguing family dysfunction, it’s no wonder the audience continues to grow. I am delighted that these two inimitable characters and their entertaining banter will extend into a second season.”

I wouldn’t call it a ‘legal drama,’ but I enjoy it and I’m glad it was renewed.
I am stunned that this has been renewed. I have been enjoying it so much, but the ratings are weak for CBS, and with two other legal pilots having been announced this week, and the fact that CBS is going to need real estate space for new shows, this seemed like the most obvious cancellation after NCIS: LA. But I’m happy that it’s gonna stick around. This means it doesn’t look good for CSI: Vegas.
CBS only ordering two drama pilots and The Never Game for 2023-24 would suggest that CBS is not looking to add that many new series for 2023-24, at least not dramas. East New York and CSI: Vegas might both be on the wrong side of the bubble. But who knows, maybe even the mightly CBS is looking at having a few dramas doing less than 22 episodes per season.
You may be right, John, about CBS starting to think about transitioning some series away from the 22-episode model, but CBS repeats all of its dramas and comedies (except I think CSI: Vegas and NCIS: LA), thus filling up the October to May schedule. The exception is their all-reality Wednesday, which never repeats. I’ve been amazed that they are still doing this when the other 3 networks rarely do repeats in-season any more. The only exceptions I can think of are NBC’s Dick Wolf shows, and ABC’s comedies. Which is why I think it’s possible that CBS might be starting to pursue other models.
NBC repeats Quantum Leap And America’s Got Talent: All-Stars episodes. In the fall, NBC also repeats some audition episodes of The Voice.
It took while but I have started to enjoy East New York. Wouldn’t it be something if Frank Reagan showed up?!
In my opinion, CSI :Vegas should move to Paramount+, so there would be more space for other shows. Which they can also do by not airing repeats in prime time. I’m so glad SHMT was renewed, it’s the best show of the season and would really deserve better ratings.

While I love Geena Davis, I’m so glad she left the pilot…it wouldn’t have been the same at all. The two lead characters are perfectly cast….great news about the renewal.
Yeah I can’t see her playing the role the same way that Marcia Gay Harden has been, it would be a different show altogether.
Same here. Geena is an amazing actress, but it seems as if the role of Margaret had been written for Marcia. Her taking over the role was the best thing that could have happened. Fantastic show, I hope it will be with us for many more seasons.

That’s a relief. I actually thought it was 11 in demo too ahead of CSI Vegas as well as NCIS LA. It’s numbers would look better on any other network, so I feared CBS might ax it simply to make space. I really like the show.
