Paris schools on track with repairs after flooding

PARIS, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Paris Union School District No. 95 recently gave an update about the condition of the high school building after several areas of the school suffered damage from flooding last year.

During the extreme cold on Christmas Day of 2022, a fire suppression line broke at the school causing water to flood the building.

The gym floor suffered some of the worst damage with the district determining it will need to be replaced, causing the rescheduling of sporting events for an extended period of time.

Superintendent Jeremy Larson said the gym floor has since been removed and a flooring company will be coming in within the next week to start laying down the new flooring for the school’s gymnasium.

Larson also mentioned that the school is monitoring other areas of the building that could be impacted by flooding.

“For example, we have concerns about the terrazzo floor where the flooring has started to become uneven in certain spots. We also have concerns about some of the carpeted areas that were flooded where we cleaned it up, but we’re continually monitoring to make sure that there’s no mold, mildew, or any type of a smell,” explained Larson.

Larson reiterated that the school building is safe for use.

“Our school is completely safe and our students are in session learning, so everything is good to go, but it’s just one of those things that we just want to make sure that we are reviewing the building and making sure everything is back to normal prior to that cold weather that set in,” Larson said.

According to Larson, the goal is to have the gym operational before the month of May.
