Man dies from gunshot wound in Murfreesboro
Detectives believe the man was shot during a robbery attempt on Pritchett Drive.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) - A 20-year-old man has died after he was shot while sitting inside a parked car in Murfreesboro on Wednesday evening.
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Pritchett Drive just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday and found Kendall Storay suffering from a gunshot wound in the passenger seat of a black Infinity sedan, according to Murfreesboro Police. Paramedics arrived and began life-saving treatment at the scene before Storay was transported to Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital, where he later died.
Detectives have determined Storay and the driver met two men that night on Pritchett Drive, according to police. When the men entered the car, one of them pulled out a gun in an attempted robbery. Storay was shot in the process and the two men, now considered suspects, ran from the scene.
“The victims trusted them enough to allow them inside the vehicle,” Murfreesboro Police Department spokesman Larry Flowers said. “They sat on the back seat and the next thing you knew they pulled out a gun and attempted to rob them. That’s when shots were fired. After shots were fired, the two males ended up running from the scene. The driver also ran so he would not get shot.”
A Murfreesboro Police K9 ran a track from the intersection of Pritchett Drive and Betsy Ann Avenue to the end of Florence Road on Wednesday night before losing the track, and Rutherford County Sheriff deputies assisted with a heat-sensor drone overnight.
Doug Sanders lives in one of the four houses on the dead-end street where the shooting happened. He said the car was parked at the end of his driveway as he left to take his daughter to church. When he returned home, the entire area was blocked off and police cars lined the street.
“My son did hear the gunshots,” Sanders said. “He was in the bathtub at the time. My wife was in bed doing school work and he said, ‘mommy is that fireworks?’”
“If this kind of combat and drug dealing is going to happen in this neighborhood, it almost makes us want to pack up and move,” Sanders said. “Thank God I didn’t get out and investigate, and walk into an obvious planned ambush of somebody and a robbery because I could’ve lost my life just trying to protect my children.”
MPD has not been able to identify any suspects at this time, but officers said this was an isolated incident and there is no immediate danger to the neighborhood.
“Apparently these two victims were targeted,” Flowers said. “The residents in that neighborhood do not need to worry. They are not in any danger. Detectives are actively looking for these two suspects. They are looking for any tips and leads that they receive at this time.”
