The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a police-involved shooting involving an officer from the Baltimore County Police Department Tuesday morning.
On January 31, just after 6 a.m., detectives with the Baltimore County Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Support Team were in the 10700 Block of Pulaski Highway in White Marsh conducting surveillance on a SUV occupied by two people, according to police.
Detectives were aware that the driver had multiple outstanding warrants. Detectives attempted to perform a vehicle block to pin the SUV in order to apprehend the driver.
After exiting their vehicles, detectives approached the SUV when the driver maneuvered out of the block, striking an unmarked police vehicle.
A 16-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department, Detective J. Trenary discharged his firearm, striking the driver. The SUV continued traveling through a parking lot and struck an unrelated civilian vehicle before crashing. The SUV driver, an adult man, was struck in the upper body and suffered life-threatening injuries.
According to police, he was taken to an local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No other individuals were injured. The name of the injured man will not be released at this time.
Detectives assigned to the Baltimore County Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Support Team are not equipped with body-worn cameras, and the involved police vehicles are not equipped with dashboard cameras.
