Prosecutors have confirmed that a Republican city councilwoman was fatally shot in her car outside her New Jersey home on Wednesday night in what police believe was a planned attack.
Sayreville Police Department officers responded to a 911 call in the area of Samuel Circle and discovered one female in her vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the victim is Eunice Dwumfour, 30, a Republican member of the Sayreville borough council.
Sayreville GOP chairwoman Karen Bailey Bebert confirmed Dwumfour’s identity in a post on Facebook as well.
“My sincerest condolences to the family of Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour,” Karen Bailey Bebert wrote. “May God bring you peace and God rest her soul.”
As of Thursday, no arrests have been made. Police said that they believe Dwumfour was the intended target of the shooting but do not have a clear motive at this time, per WABC News in New York.
Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said the entire community is shocked and saddened to hear of Dwumfour’s death.
“Eunice was a dedicated member of our borough council who was truly committed to serve all of our residents. The fact that she was taken from us by a despicable criminal act makes this incident all the more horrifying,” Kilpatrick said. “As mayor, I have worked very closely with Eunice in her time on the borough council. Beyond her dedication to our community, I can share that she was a woman of deep faith and worked hard to integrate her strong Christian beliefs into her daily life as a person and a community leader. On a personal note, I can’t adequately express my feeling of sorrow at the loss of a friend.”
Dwumfour’s death is being actively investigated as a homicide by Sayreville Police and Middlesex County officials. She was elected in 2021 to her position on the council and worked as a business analyst and part-time EMT.
Sayreville is a borough of Middlesex County, southwest of Staten Island, New York. New Jersey has some of the strictest gun laws in the country after Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation in December banning concealed carry in sensitive places. Several challenges to the law have made it difficult to enforce in certain areas.
Murphy said he was “stunned” by the news in a statement.

“I am stunned by the news of Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour’s murder last evening in an act of gun violence,” Murphy said. “Her career of public service was just beginning, and by all accounts, she had already built a reputation as [a] committed member of the Borough Council who took her responsibility with the utmost diligence and seriousness. I send my condolences to her family and friends, and the entire Sayreville community. I urge anyone with information to contact Sayreville local law enforcement.”
