Star Trek: Picard season 3's full trailer has unveiled Ed Speleers' mystery character, who's set for a few run-ins with the iconic Jean-Luc himself.

With TV roles including Jimmy Kent in Downton Abbey and Stephen Bonnet in Outlander, the newcomer comes face-to-face with Patrick Stewart's Picard several times throughout the action – mostly involving pointed guns.

Speleers joins Star Trek: Picard season 3 as a series regular "who aids Beverly Crusher's medical efforts on worlds Starfleet has forgotten", while Todd Stashwick (9-1-1: Lone Star) will appear in a recurring role as Captain of the USS Titan, too.

Pulp Fiction's Amanda Plummer is also seen in the season 3 trailer. She's playing Vadic, the alien captain of a warship called Shrike.

"With each ticking moment, I will take another piece of you..." Vadic threatens after setting her sights on Picard and his crew.

A synopsis for the show's final season reads: "A desperate message from a long-lost friend draws Starfleet legend Admiral Jean-Luc Picard into the most daring mission of his life, forcing him to recruit allies spanning generations old and new.

"This final adventure sets him on a collision course with the legacy of his past and explosive, new revelations that will alter the fate of the Federation forever."

Meanwhile, Stewart recently hinted that Picard may not actually wrap up with its third season, with "enormous potential for matters in what we can do" still out there.

"There are doors left open and we didn't close all of them," said the actor.

Co-creator Alex Kurtzman backed up Stewart's comments, saying: "If the show blows the doors off the place, and we're certainly hoping it will as we're very proud of season 3, who knows?"

Star Trek: Picard season 3 launches on Paramount+ in the US on Thursday, February 16. It will air on Prime Video in the UK, with new episodes premiering weekly from Friday, February 17.
