CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- Even though his Cleveland State University tennis career has started slowly because of a wrist injury, former Chagrin Falls Tiger Andrew Zimcosky is an integral piece to the spring plans of the Viking tennis program.

On a limited basis this past fall, the freshman finished with a 1-1 singles record and a 6-2 record in doubles competition.

Vikings men’s head tennis coach Brian Etzkin believes Zimcosky will play a major role in the CSU tennis program this spring and beyond.

“He is almost fully recovered and ready to be part of our dual-match lineup,” Etzkin said. “It’s always special when the best players in the Cleveland area choose to come to their hometown school, and I’m excited about what’s to come during his career as a Viking.”

The Chagrin Falls High School graduate dominated high school tennis competition, posting an 80-7 singles record and winning two state championships as a singles player. He was a three-time All-Ohio honoree.

Zimcosky believes his tennis career at Chagrin Falls prepared him for the beginning stages of this CSU tennis journey.

“I think high school tennis prepared me well for the transition to college tennis,” Zimcosky said. “Playing in front of larger crowds, especially during conference matches and the state tournament, also helped me with the mental side of tennis.”

The former three-time Chagrin Valley Conference tennis MVP lives on campus at Cleveland State, which is a little different from the village by the falls.

“I pretty much walk to everything, and have been able to make it to quite a few Cavs, Guardians and Browns games. It’s nice to be so close to major events happening in Cleveland,” explains the computer engineering major.

As the Vikings challenge nationally ranked tennis opponents such as The Ohio State University this spring, Zimcosky feels optimistic about his team and his health.

“Honestly, I am looking forward to competing, now that I’m healthy. I’m excited to play on a more consistent basis,” he said.

“I’m fortunate to be a part of this team, since we have such a great group of guys, and I’m eager to make a positive impact.

Even though his calendar is packed with classes and tennis, the former Tiger keeps in touch with a few members of the Chagrin Falls High tennis team, and if time permits will be a spectator at some matches this spring on East Washington Street.
