Las Vegas Raiders reportedly shifting QB search focus to Aaron Rodgers trade

Following the news of Tom Brady’s retirement from the NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders will reportedly shift gears and pursue a different future Hall-of-Fame quarterback that might be up for grabs this offseason.

The Las Vegas Raiders have put themselves in a difficult position. Last spring the organization made several major additions to a roster that was already good enough to win 10 games in 2021. However, the roster underperformed this season under new head coach Josh McDaniels, and the team made nine-year veteran Derek Carr the scapegoat for their failings in 2022.

The Raiders sent a clear message to the league in Week 16 that they were ready to find a new quarterback to lead their offense. No easy task, but fortunately for Las Vegas, this offseason is a perfect time to attempt to fill, arguably, the most important position in sports.

Heading into the offseason, many signs pointed to the organization making a serious chase for impending NFL free agent Tom Brady. However, after he decided to retire on Wednesday, the player that was reportedly the Las Vegas Raiders’ Plan A at quarterback for 2023 is now off the board. But it seems the team may now shift gears from Brady to a pursuit of another legendary QB.

Several organizations around the NFL are in a transition period at quarterback, be it with expectations to take one in a deep draft or possibly move on from their current incumbent. One of those teams is the Green Bay Packers, who are reportedly seriously considering trading team legend Aaron Rodgers.

On Thursday, Pro Football Talk reported that the Las Vegas Raiders “absolutely” planned to target Brady at the start of NFL free agency. Now with that not an option, the outlet alleges that sources have informed them that the organization is expected to take a hard look at making a trade for three-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers.

The source did indicate it could be a very difficult task with Rodgers first needing to approve a move to Las Vegas, and the cost for his services likely to be very steep. However, there is the selling point of a reunion with former teammate Davante Adams. Rodgers was allegedly upset by the Packers’ decision to trade him to the Raiders last offseason.

The Las Vegas Raiders currently hold the seventh pick in this 2023 NFL Draft.
