The Chevrolet Corvette is one of the most beloved sports cars of all time. It’s cherished across multiple generations for its beautiful styling, quick acceleration, and fun-to-drive nature. Also, the iconic sports car has experienced a resurgence in popularity with the mid-engine C8 model. However, like other vehicles, the Corvette isn’t completely immune to problems. Here are the most common Chevy Corvette problems reported by hundreds of real owners.

Some entities that evaluate cars base their reliability analysis on their own testing. However, that isn’t always reflective of real-world scenarios. RepairPal addresses this by collecting vehicle data for the Corvette and other models from real owners — including the frequency, severity, and cost of repairs.

Here are the three most common Chevy Corvette problems:

  • Fuel level sensor failure
  • Check engine light due (gas cap issue)
  • Service steering column lock message due to anti-theft system fault

It’s important to keep in mind that most Corvette models are not affected by these problems. However, according to the data that RepairPair collected from owners, they are the most common ones. Let’s take a closer look at these issues.

Fuel level sensor failure is the most frequent problem for Chevy Corvette, according to RepairPal

The most common Chevy Corvette problem reported by real owners is fuel level sensor failure. This issue results in an incorrect reading of the amount of fuel left in the gas tank. Addressing this problem requires the replacement of the sensor. Also, for models with high mileage, the complete replacement of the fuel pump might be necessary. According to RepairPal, the average cost of fuel pump replacement ranges from $1,078-$1,231.

Check engine light due to gas cap issue

The second-most frequent problem for the Chevy Corvette is the check engine light due to a gas cap issue. If the gas cap is loose or worn, it can cause the check engine indicator to light up on the dashboard. Compared to other issues, this one is relatively minor. It may require a check engine light diagnosis and testing, which has an average cost between $88-$111. Also, simply tightening the gas gap might resolve the problem.

Service steering column lock message due to anti-theft system fault

The other common issue reported by owners of the sports car is a bit of a strange one. The service steering column message displays due to a defect in the anti-theft system. This problem can be quite serious, for it may cause the engine to start and stall when placed into gear. Moreover, addressing the problem requires repairing the steering column lock system.

Fortunately, the issue only affects older Corvette models (C5s from 1997-2004; and the C6 from 2006). However, some models were recalled. Like most recalls, the repairs should be covered. For a general diagnosis of a potential anti-theft system defect, though, RepairPal lists an average cost between $88 -$111.

Is the Chevy Corvette a reliable car?

In terms of overall reliability, the Chevy Corvette sports car is average for all model years. RepairPal gives it a reliability rating of three out of five. Also, the average annual cost of repairs is average at around $737 per year.

However, the current-generation C8 model is very reliable. J.D. Power gives the 2023 Corvette a “best” reliability rating of 93/100.
