The annual Indianola Spring Cleanup begins April 24th, running through April 28th. Items will be picked up on recycling day, and must be out on the curb by 7am, and only large items not hauled through the weekly service will be picked up, and does not include construction materials, railroad ties, or tires, and items that are bulky and difficult to handle such as swing sets, which must be cut up or dismantled into pieces no longer than four feet. While it’s about a month later than normal, the Pella City Council held the first of two annual budget workshops Tuesday. For fiscal year 2024, City Administration proposed a plan that would spend $55.7 million – or an increase of 19%, starting this July. This new plan includes a proposal to maintain the current property tax rate at $10.20 per $1,000 of valuation and an increase of water rates of 7%.

City of Pella Hosted First Budget Session Tuesday; Second Tonight

The Pella Police Department is hosting the next Citizens Public Safety Academy beginning in May. The Citizens Public Safety Academy will incorporate components from the Pella Police Department, as well as the Pella Fire Department and Pella Community Ambulance. This class is free to attend. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6 P.M. beginning May 10th. Next Citizens Public Safety Academy Returns to Pella in May

The Pella School Board reviewed the district’s certified budget process at their meeting Monday. A presentation was given to highlight the current fiscal status of the district and a comparison of property tax rates over multiple years. The board scheduled a public hearing for formal consideration of the fiscal year 2024 budget on April 10th, with the goal to maintain the current overall tax rate at $14.60 per $1,000 of valuation.

The Indianola HyVee is honoring a long-time employee’s retirement in a special way, naming a street in the Indianola HyVee parking lot. Store Manager Nate Fehl tells KNIA News Cindy Oehlert has worked for the Indianola HyVee for the last 50 years and announced her intention to retire, and now commuters entering the Indianola HyVee parking lot near the south side of the building will now be driving on Cindy Oehlert Boulevard.

Iowa Learning Farms and the Warren County Natural Resources Conservation Service are partnering to host a cover crop workshop today at Agri-Tech Aviation near Indianola. The event will review the benefits to farmers and landowners about cover crops, including reduced soil erosion, weed suppression potential, reduced nitrogen and phosphorus loads entering water bodies, and increased organic matter in the soil.

North 14th Street at East Hillcrest Avenue in Indianola was closed this week as part of the Industrial Park Improvement Project. North 14th Street can be accessed from East Iowa Ave, and the closure is due to utilities work in the area, and is expected to be closed for three weeks weather dependent. When complete, the project will open nearly 60 acres of ground for future industrial development.

Simpson College held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new turf fields for McBride Field and the Simpson Softball Stadium on Saturday. Athletic Director Marty Bell tells KNIA News the fields are part of an overall effort to upgrade the facilities at Simpson that included upgrades to Cowles Fieldhouse, the wrestling room, and now the turf for the baseball and softball teams among others, making Simpson a better destination for students.

The Pella Police Department would like to remind residents of changes to the city’s Outdoor Warning System during Iowa Severe Weather Awareness Week. Administrative Services Manager Marcia Slycord says the sirens in Pella are part of an outdoor, all-hazards siren system that is used to warn citizens of potential danger in a short amount of time, and is designed to provide coverage to those outdoors–-not inside buildings or structures.

The official Disc Golf Pro Tour is coming back to Indianola in 2023, the third straight year of hosting the event at Pickard Park. TruBank has announced they are again sponsoring the event for the second straight year, and is expected to bring thousands of visitors to Indianola this summer, and will be one of just 20 events held nationwide as part of the tour in 2023. TruBank also announced last year that as part of the sponsorship, the prize totals will be even for both the men’s and women’s category. The Des Moines Challenge will be June 23-25 in Pickard Park.

The Knoxville and Indianola Girls Soccer Squads opened up the spring sports seasons for both programs in 2023 on Monday night on The Pitch at Randy Wilson Track in Knoxville, and it was the Indians who came out on top 4-0 over Knoxville. It did not take long for Indianola to get the scoring start just 9:00 into the match when Angelika Miller scored to make it 1-0, then with just under 2:00 left in the 1st half, Remy Sivertson allowed Indianola to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Camden Palmer and Adrianne Sinclair put in goals in the 2nd half to make the final tally. Knoxville is 0-1 on the season and will host Grinnell on Friday while Indianola is 1-0 and will travel to Southeast Polk on Thursday.
