Trae Broadnax Leads Spartans with a Career-High 20 Points As Men's Basketball Falls at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Looking to avenge an earlier season setback to Campbell, USC Upstate men's basketball went on the road and sought to down the Camels on their home floor. Unfortunately, the Spartans couldn't overcome a hot-shooting Campbell team in a 78-66 loss Wednesday night.

The Spartans swung momentum heading into the break with an 8-0 run, but the Camels regained the momentum again in the second half, shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-21) to craft a field goal percentage of 59.5 percent for the game.

For Upstate, redshirt sophomore guard Trae Broadnax poured in a career-high 20 points, leading all scorers, as he finished the game shooting 80 percent from the floor and 100 percent from three. He was joined in double-figures by Jordan Gainey and Justin Bailey who added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

How It Happened
First Half
  • Into the first media stoppage of the game, Upstate and Campbell went back and forth as the Spartans built an early lead. After the Camels opened the scoring, Justin Bailey splashed a three before Jordan Gainey hit a pull-up jumper with Khydarius Smith hitting a hook shot into the timeout to give Upstate the lead.
  • Fighting back to take the lead, Campbell used the game's longest scoring run of the first half, going on a 9-0 scoring stretch to take the lead. The run forced a Spartan timeout and took the game to the under-12 media with Trae Braodnax nailing a trey to end the run.
  • Continuing to build upon their lead, the Camels used hot-shooting from beyond the arc and the fastbreak to push the lead into double-digits, growing the lead to as many as 16. Upstate stayed in the game, making a couple of tough baskets and finding its way to the free throw line.
  • Cutting into the Campbell lead, Upstate scored the final eight points of the first half to cut the lead in half. Bailey hit all three of his foul shots after being fouled on a three attempt before Floyd Rideau Jr. hit a deep three and Braodnax added a layup to send the Spartans into the locker room on a scoring run.

Second Half
  • Entering the half on an 8-0 scoring run, Upstate built upon its momentum as it opened the half on a 7-1 scoring run to cut down the Campbell lead. The run to start the half expanded to 9-3 as the Spartans got the lead down to a single possession.
  • Out of the first media, Campbell built back its lead by outscoring Upstate 11-5 between the under-16 and under-12 media stoppages. The Spartans' points in the stretch came from Gainey and Broadnax who hit a three and layup, respectively.
  • Pulling Upstate closer as the game got into the final minutes, Braodnax led a personal 7-0 scoring run for the Spartans that trimmed the deficit to seven heading toward the under-four media timeout. He'd go on to score 10 straight Upstate points to reach a career-high 20 points.
  • Over the final two minutes of the game, Campbell used the free throw line to put the game away, scoring seven of its final nine points from the charity stripe. The Camels outscored Upstate 9-3 over the final minutes to secure the 12-point victory.

Notable
  • Shooting 80 percent (8-of-10) from the field and 100 percent (3-of-3) from three, Trae Broadnax set career-highs in points (20), field goals made (eight), and three-pointers made (three). He scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half, his second-best scoring second half of the season.
  • With a three from Justin Bailey on the team's first possession of the game, Upstate improved its streak of games with a made three to 862 games, dating back to the 1994-95 season. The streak includes each of the Spartans' 495 games at the NCAA Division I level (2007-pres.).
