HONOLULU (KITV4) -- Gerard Puana, the uncle of convicted felon and former Honolulu Prosecutor Katherine Kealoha, has reached a nearly 3 million dollar settlement with the City and County of Honolulu.
Puana was at the center of the infamous case after being framed for mailbox theft as part of the fraud from his niece and her husband former Police Chief Louis Kealoha.
He sued the city over damage to his reputation from being wrongly accused.
His lawyer initially asked for $30 million, but is happy with the amount, which they believe will recover Puana's losses -- and also make up for the inheritance he would have received from his late mother, Florence Puana, who the Kealoha's stole from.
“Until the settlement agreement has been approved by the Honolulu City Council, the City will decline the opportunity to comment further on the case,” said City and County of Honolulu's Deputy Communications Director Ian Scheuring.
