Fake Amazon rep tells woman she was involved in Russian money laundering: Solon Police Blotter

SOLON, Ohio

Fraud: Aurora Road

At 9:35 a.m. Jan. 25, a Solon woman, 71, reported that she had received a call from someone claiming to represent Amazon. The caller said the woman owed $400 for a computer and that her Amazon account had been flagged for being connected to money laundering in Russia.

In order to rectify the situation, the caller told the woman she needed to make withdrawals from her bank account, then buy gift cards from Target.

The woman was told to give the caller the identification numbers on the cards and she complied. The woman spent $505.16 on the gift cards, then got suspicious and called police.

Fraud: Outley Park Drive

At 10:45 a.m. Jan. 23, a Solon man, 22, reported that he had been contacted on the phone by someone claiming to be an employee of a bank at which the man has an account.

The caller stated that there had been fraudulent activity on the man’s account that needed to be rectified. In the process of what the man believed to be clearing of the fraud matter, he gave the caller identifying and account information.

The man later noticed that $6,000 had been drained from his account. He then called his bank and learned that he had been the victim of a scam.

Assault: Inwood Drive

At 11:35 a.m. Jan. 23, a security officer at Solon High School, 33600 Inwood Drive, reported that he had been involved in a hallway confrontation with a student, a boy, 17.

The officer had asked the student his name and to accompany him to the administration office. The student refused.

The officer, 64, of Aurora, called school staff for support. An administrator met the officer and student in the hallway and the officer walked away. The student then followed and punched the officer in the back.

The officer was not injured, but wanted to press charges.

The boy was turned over to his father. Police did not immediately charge the boy, but referred the case to juvenile court.

Domestic violence: SOM Center Road

At 7:40 a.m. Jan. 25, police were called to a home where a man, 43, and his son, 17, were arguing. During the argument, the man pushed his son.

Police determined that the father was the aggressor and arrested him for domestic violence. No one was injured.

The case was referred to Cuyahoga County Child and Family Services.

OVI: Aurora Road

At 7 a.m. Jan. 25, officers were called to Aurora Road at Enterprise Parkway, where the driver of a commercial tractor trailer had failed to stop at a red light and struck a Ford van attempting to make a turn.

It was subsequently learned that the truck driver, who had bloodshot eyes, was intoxicated. The Northfield man, 53, was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .250, well above the state minimum for drunk driving of .08.

Police charged him with OVI, OVI while driving a commercial vehicle, having a prohibited blood-alcohol content, driving with expired plates and not stopping at a red light.

Fleeing and eluding: SOM Center Road

At 1:40 p.m. Jan. 26, an officer patrolling on snow-covered roads noticed a white sedan speeding, traveling 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer attempted to follow, but the car sped west on Cromwell Drive, into a residential neighborhood.

The officer briefly gave chase and eventually found the car, as it had skidded off the road on Sedgefield Oval and struck a light post and mailbox. Police arrested the driver, a Solon man, 19.

Police charged the man with fleeing and eluding, speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving left of center, failure to control, reckless operation and driving an unsafe vehicle.

Theft: Aurora Road

At 4:30 p.m. Jan. 27, management at the bulk retail store Where Ya Bin, 33321 Aurora Road, reported theft involving their employees.

An employee had allowed three people to walk through the checkout line without paying full price. The total amount of loss to the store exceeded $2,000.

A warrant for theft was issued for the employee, a Cleveland man, 27.

Two fellow employees were also charged for playing a part in the theft. These employees both received some of the merchandise. They are both 34-year-old Macedonia residents, a man and a woman.

A Solon woman, 42, who was not an employee, also received some of the merchandise and was arrested for theft.
