“HIDDEN: LIFE WITH CALIFORNIA’S ROMA FAMILIES” PHOTO EXHIBITION (Thursday)

Courtesy flyer to the photography exhibition, “Hidden: Life with California’s Roma Families,” by Cristina Salvador Klenz at Cal State Long Beach Thursday, Feb. 2.

Local photojournalist Cristina Salvador Klenz has dedicated years of her life to photographing Southern California’s Roma families, work that culminated after 30 years in “Hidden: Life with California’s Roma Families” by Brown Paper Press, a book featuring 120 of her black-and-white photos, shot on 35 mm film.

The photography book was the first of its kind to document American Roma (also known as Gypsy) communities, some of which include families in Long Beach. Though these family lineages share a unique history of persecution stemming from European condemnation and genocide during the Holocaust, today many Romani-Americans have little social contact with each other. Through her book, Klenz hopes that readers gain a greater understanding of Romani-American history, life, family and tradition.

A collection of the photographs will be featured in an exhibition at Cal State Long Beach from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday until April 29, but locals can get a special glimpse into the work from Klenz herself on Thursday, Feb. 2, when she will give a tour of the exhibit and talk about each particular photograph. The free exhibition can be found on the third floor of the Academic Services Building on the college campus, and Thursday’s event will last from 5-7 p.m., with Klenz’s tour starting at 5:30 p.m.

Cal State Long Beach is at 1250 Bellflower Blvd.

LONG BEACH SYMPHONY CONCERT CELEBRATES THE SEASONS – TERRACE THEATER (Saturday)

With tickets to Long Beach Symphony’s next classics concert, listeners will hear nature translated into sound with a spectacular performance of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” violin concertos and Mozart’s stormy Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

The evening celebration of timeless classical music is part of the Long Beach Symphony’s 88th season. Under the direction of Maestro Eckart Preu, the magic of the music will reflect the warmth of springtime or the intensity of a hot summer or freezing winter day. Each of Vivaldi’s seasons will be exquisitely presented by Long Beach Symphony’s stellar lead violinists Roger Wilkie, Agnes Gottschewski, Chloé Tardif and Chyi-Yau Lee.

“The combination of ‘The Four Seasons’ with Symphony No. 40—two well-loved masterworks—provides audiences with virtuosic playing by world-class musicians,” Long Beach Symphony President Kelly Ruggirello said.

Tickets for the show at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, are available now and start at $32. The doors open early at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. pre-concert talk. Reserve your seat now at LongBeachSymphony.org or by calling 562-436-3203, ext. 1.

The Terrace Theater is at 300 E. Ocean Blvd.
