Robbery attempt fails at bank ATM: Mayfield Heights Police Blotter

Attempted robbery: SOM Center Road

A woman reported around 12:30 a.m. Jan. 21 that while she was stopped at an ATM at Key Bank to make a deposit, someone came up to her passenger-side window and pointed something wrapped in a plastic bag at her.

Suspecting that the man had a gun, she immediately left the area and drove to the police station.

Officers checked the area, but did not locate any suspects. It was unknown if the suspect had a vehicle or had been walking. The incident is under investigation.

Fraud: Washington Boulevard

A woman reported Jan. 25 that someone had fraudulently opened a second bank account in her name with her bank and transferred $9,400 from her legitimate account to the new one.

She learned about it when the bank called her. But when she responded to the local branch, she was told that nobody from the bank had contacted her and that it was scam.

It was believed that the woman had unknowingly given access to her banking information after clicking on a link on her phone.

At the time of the report, the $9,400 balance in the fraudulent account had been moved or used by the scammers.

Suspicion: Woodhurst Avenue

A man said Jan. 20 that his stolen car had been towed to Ganley Nissan after being recovered in Cleveland, but the staff could not locate the car.

It was later learned that the insurance company had the vehicle picked up by a towing company that did communicate with them.

Theft: Golden Gate Plaza

A man was banned from Bath & Body Works Jan. 24 after he was seen filling a backpack with merchandise. It appeared he had emptied it out when he saw employees watching him.

Suspicion: Marsol Road

A man said Jan. 18 that the maintenance workers at the Drake apartments had put a tracking device on his car and had used their key to enter his apartment and eat his grapes and other food.

Officers confirmed that there was no tracking device on the vehicle and suggested that he get a surveillance camera for his apartment. They noted that he was likely in the early stages of memory loss.

Disturbance: SOM Center Road

A Micro Center employee said Jan. 19 that a customer had damaged some property and pushed another customer after he was denied a return.

Officers located the boy in the area and issued him a trespass warning. The customer who was pushed did not want to pursue the matter.

Suspicion: Marsol Road

A woman said Jan. 24 that the previous day, a disheveled man was following her around at the Drake apartments and made a sexual gesture to her, but never said anything.

Officers advised her to immediately report such activity to police and not to apartment security, as she had done.

Traffic stop: Interstate 271

A gun was located in a purse in a vehicle during a traffic stop Jan. 24, but the driver said it belonged to a friend.

However, during later review of dash cam video, the woman, who had been waiting alone in a cruiser while Warrensville Heights police were responding to pick her up on a warrant, was heard talking on the phone about going to jail because her gun was found.

The Cleveland woman, 27, was subsequently cited for driving under suspension and released to Warrensville Heights police.

A 34-year-old passenger was arrested on a traffic warrant he had with the city.

Neighbor trouble: West Miner Road

A man said Jan. 25 that he had a dispute with a neighbor regarding a parking issue. He said the neighbor felt he was parked too close to the driveway apron and was causing a hazard.

Officers concluded that his vehicle was not parked in violation.
